I've seen a few different numbers ranging from like 3.9n/mm to 5n/mm, the ones I ordered are 6.5n/mm and have a preload spacer you can throw in if needed too.

This is the best set of instructions I've seen so far: https://racetech.com/PAGE/TITLE/IP FMGV S260802C Grom

I could probably use a heat gun and i'd feel better about avoiding overheating. I'm tempted to try and 3d print a set of the tool/vice cradle. Wouldn't be that hard of a design to do and the direction of the force it needs to resist would be the strong axis of a printed part, I think.

We'll see what I end up doing.. Steady garage's return policy is (understandably) pretty strict, I'd pay return shipping plus original shipping costs and restocking fees, so that'd be like half of any refund amount right there gone. And in theory after the initial change any subsequent changes would be much easier and not require torching again.

I will try that tomorrow! I do want to take the bike on more trips so I need to get this issue solved.

The heated grips were on max for several hours, so if the stator could barely keep up with the stock system, adding LED lights and heated grips certainly could have overloaded it?

LED lights typically free up wattage to run additional stuff. Heated items, such as grips draw extra wattage beyond the bikes normal operating requirements. If you had heated grips on their highest setting for an extended period and the engine RPMs were relatively low you could have been operating at a deficit. Your stator would have not been producing enough power to run everything needed all at the same time so some items would have been running off the battery and depleting it.

Using my FJR as an example. One rally rider I know well was running 4 extra driving lights, 2 GPS units, and heated jacket liner and heated gloves during a rally. Temps were cold for that time of year so his heated gear was on pretty high. They got to a bonus location after dark so he pointed the bike so the lights were illuminating the bonus for his picture and hit the kill switch just shutting off the engine. Taking photo took less than a minute. Bike would not restart. Looked at his voltage meter and he was down to under 9 volts showing. His partner helped him push start the bike and he had to turn off one set of lights and the heated gear for a couple of hours until his battery got back up to over 12 volts.

My thought when I bought my Nomar changer too. Depends on what you're paying to get tires mounted in your area and how often you need to change them. In my area I'm seeing $50-75 per tire to mount and balance and that's if you carry in the wheel already off the bike. Add to that a lot of shops won't do a tire they didn't sell and it can get pricey pretty fast. I've been doing 2 pairs per season for the past almost 10 years. Figured anything after 10 tires and the equipment had paid for itself plus I do it at my own convenience. If I recall I even told you to come up and we could do your tires at my house if you wanted. Having the Nomar has been a great reason to just hang out with other riders and do our own maintenance.

I wanted to try it on my own. Now that I know how to do it, and to have a spare tube on hand, im not sure if id try it again myself. I did do it when I had covid and it was 80 degrees. I think shops charge $25 each if you bring the wheel off the bike.

If i had a slightly better setup than a bucket, maybe i would enjoy it more. Plus i know my tools were not sufficient. Looks like Im getting about one year per tire. Not horrible in my opinion.

The LED lights are auxiliary lights, so they are drawing even more power (granted, only 15w for both combined, but it's still not helping). From what I've read, these bikes didn't have the strongest charging system from the factory so adding anything could easily cook the battery.

I bought a Nomar changer for cheap (used) but never used it. One of the shops locally does free mount and balance if you bring the wheels off the bike and you purchase tires through them. Otherwise CycleGear does them for $25/tire.

Speaking of tires, it looks like my rear is already wearing down after 6k miles. Granted my bike is heavy and the tire is only a 160 and I end up riding it hard but was hoping for ~10k miles before thinking of a replacement.
