Are access cab Tacomas not that popular?

I bought a AC truck because they stay warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer. Someone who has driven an access cab or short cab truck for many years would probably agree that extra space in the back means more space for subwoofers and jackets (I get up at 4a for work).

The only Tacoma configuration I would consider was an AC. If I couldn’t find one I would have not gotten a Tacoma. Took a few months and a few failed attempts before I found mine, an OR in MGM. Hard to find! As I was taking it for a test drive someone else showed up at the dealership to buy it. It was a lease return, but in immaculate condition.

I’m happily unmarried and childfree and have no need for the cab space. The first thing that came out were those jump seats and now it’s all storage space. If I need to haul people around, I use my rav or the boyfriends Jeep.

I’m a biologist so I had to have the longer bed for my gear and work equipment. I camp out of it several weeks a year and have it set up for my needs. In fact, I’m off to spend 10 days next week working on Fort Irwin surveying for desert tortoise as the army wants to use a couple areas for a training exercise. I’ll be camping out of my truck for about 8 days of that. I love that I can just climb into the bed and sleep in it stretched out, with all my gear!

Access Cabs in TRD Sport or TRD Off-Road is hard to find. The majority of sellers are 4 door/4 seat anything whether its a car, truck, SUV. Coupes in cars and extended/access cabs in trucks are not big sellers so Toyota limits the production numbers on these sadly. Long story short searched 3 months and found my dream configuration 7 hours north - TRD Sport, Access Cab, 6MT, Lunar Rock. Could not be happier with this truck as I did not want rear seats which I never use. The search is worth the wait though...

 

How do I load my groceries?

 

Yeah, that extra foot of floor length has no advantage...

Have to disagree, easier to bucket load a yard of material. Skis fit better, longer than shortbed.

I debated ACLB vs DCSB endlessly when looking into 3rd gen Tacomas. I had an AC 1st gen Tacoma before this, so that was the direction I was leaning for the new truck since it worked great for my needs. If they sold a DCLB with the 6MT, I probably would have bought that. If they sold an ACLB TRDOR 6MT in the US, that would have been my 2nd choice. I'm a single guy with a dog and rarely need to carry more than one passenger, so the ACLB seemed like the best choice. I just couldn't bring myself to buy the Sport ACLB 6MT, wanted the Offroad for a long time.

I ended up with the DCSB TRDOR 6MT, and honestly I'm happy I didn't go with either the ACLB sport or the DCLB offroad in hindsight. My dog has the entire backseat to himself, I have one of the hammock style covers to keep the hair and scratches at bay. It's proven nice for road trips to keep duffle bags, backpacks, etc. locked in the cab with plenty of room to spare for the dog, in my 1st gen ACLB the back seat filled up fast and my dog had to ride shotgun in the passenger seat. 5' box hasn't proven too small yet, but I'm not a homeowner, so my projects for hauling bigger stuff haven't started yet in life. If I ever find the bed lacking, I'll buy a small utility trailer for hauling bigger items. Never had the desire to sleep in the bed, my $100 Coleman tent sets up in 5 minutes and I can stand up fully in the middle to get dressed. My style of camping is usually static though, so I can see where the bed would be a better option if you're constantly moving.

My 1st gen ACLB, the back seat just seamed to turn into a void of misc. things that I threw back there. So far, the tradeoff for 1' more rear cab room has been better utilized than a 6' bed for my purposes. A DCLB would barely fit in my garage, and IMO, you lose some of the utility/maneuverability of a mid size truck when you get to that size, I would think a full size truck would be better suited for someone who needs cab + bed space, although full size crew cab trucks with 6.5' beds are like driving a school bus, and good luck parking them.

Ultimately, it's nice that Toyota gives us the options since different people have different needs, but I'm not surprised that DCSB is the most popular because I think it's the most versatile as well. I know plenty of "<6' box ain't a real truck" type people, which if you need that space, there are plenty of options. My 5' bed with a softopper has plenty of volume to Tetris whatever I need back there, where the volume is more useful for my stuff more so than needing the extra length. Only things that haven't fit in the bed so far were my rear bumper and sliders, and they were both fine to haul with the tailgate down.

 

I've got the exact same year and trim as you for mostly the same reasons. But a LB would be more useful IMC.

 

Even more rare when you want all the tech (BSM, CTA, …). I had to fly over 600 miles away to get mine.

 

My 99 and 2021 are access cabs. Works great for me. When I was ordering the 2021 Access cab the dealer kept asking, are you sure this is what you want...? HAHA

 

NEVER had issues with ANY of my other vehicles that had one. Unless you are talking from personal experience, don't buy into the hype. I take it that your user name is why you said what you did. If so, then I guess you just got unlucky.

 

It would be nicer if Toyota would actually let us configure what we want since I know configurations unavailable here are available a few hours north of me, in Canada.

 

I lost count of dealers who said they would not sell out of their states or regions. That was another big problem during the nationwide search.

 

Yes, countless for me as well. They wanted to keep locals happy and sell to those who might be more likely to use their service department. Can’t argue that in low inventory times. Many others that wanted several $K extra for non-locals.

 

LOVE my Access Cab! Hate it when I have to open the back door in a parking lot though. LOVE it again when I have to open the back door when I am camping or otherwise. LOVE the long bed without the extra wheelbase. The back seat is stripped with a Molle panel on the back of the cab, great for hanging storage. My CFX45 is semi-permanently mounted behind the passenger seat. Room to spare for gear and/or dog. Long bed allows for very comfortable sleeping platform and under that are camping bins and 18gal water tank. I do personally like the looks of it over a Double Cab, totally subjective. I doubt I would have bought a Tacoma if it were not available in this configuration.
