Best place to tap the dome light is in the drivers A pillar.

The blue and yellow wire in the gray IN1 connector.

Being this is a 2nd Gen. thread, your comment is worthless! That connector does not exist on 2nd gens. refer to the posts from 3 years ago for CORRECT info.

    Worked perfect on my 2013!

Instead of a PINK wire it was WHITE for my year.

    This and that...
Did you get the blue and pink mixed up in this text? In the photo and diagram I believe you have it reversed... Sorry to bring up an old thread. Just trying to be sure of the right switched ground. Going to grab power from my bussman under the hood. Thanks!

I've installed at set of those 4Runner mirrors (heat/turns/ditch lights), would this be the same method to tap for getting the ditch lights to work?

I also am looking for a good source for a momentary switch to activate my heater relay.

Need some help on this old thread for opt 7 sidekick running board lights. All good until trying to hook up the one wire from the lights and am stumped exactly what to wire to at the black plug under the dash for the door assist/courtesy light with only one wire from the lights. Basic electrical skills so any help or drawings with pictures would be appreciated. This last wire is all I have left to finish for the door assist but haven’t had any luck yet.

    Hi All,

First of all a big thanks to all of you that have posted so many wonderful ideas and links for mods. I have done a number of them, and they all went very well because of all of you!

Earlier in this thread Riverdog had a great writeup on tapping the dome light wires at the light. He actually chose to solder his switched negative wire to the dome circuit. Since I wanted to have my footwell light mod work with when either a door was opened, or when I turned on the dome light. I chose to go this route. Instead of soldering the wires, I decided to try using crimped spade terminals, and it work great.

    1. Gently drill out the hole in lamp holder a little with a 7/64" bit.
    2. Run a self taping #6 Sheet Metal screw into the holes, also being gentle.
    3. I removed the self tapper and put in a 1/2" long #6 SM screw. See pic 1
    4. I used a Dremel to remove the shoulder on the side of the screw locations so that spade terminal would lay flat, and also trimmed the spade terminals a little so they would rotate towards the wiring location, and also clipped off the excess plastic collar as there is not enough room in the dome assembly to have stuff sticking out off center more than about 3/4". See Pic 2
    5. I put the spade terminals onto the wire on the bench, and after running the wire over to the A pillar, like Riverdog, the finished unit looks like Pic 3 before re-installing.
If you prefer to tap the hot wire in the A pillar as some members have done, then you only need to tap the switched negative at the dome light.

All in all, it worked out well, and the dome light seats properly into it's assembly, and the lights work as expected. Oh, I did put in an Axiom LED lamp, so I did not have to upsize the fuse on this circuit, but I did not install puddle lights. (at least not yet) :)Tacoma Dome light 1.jpg Tacoma Dome light 2.jpg Tacoma Dome light 3.jpg

Hope this helps folks out, and again thanks to everyone for all the great info.

    Thanks dpele!

Quick Update: Technically the wires in Pic 3 are reversed. The silver colored plate in Pic 2 is the switched ground, and now has the black wire going to that. The brass colored plate is positive = red wire. Got in too big a hurry trying to get this mod done before dinner. :)
I have the footwell lights temped in, and they dim and brighten just like the dome light. Just need to do the final "mounting of the strip LED's and all done.

Here is a pdf of all the electrical connections inside the dome assembly:

I want to add some LED strip lights to the inside of my cab. (It is way too dim for these old eyes.) Does anyone have any cool ideas on placement? Footwells are cool, but I need light for reading notes and such, (I am a Fire Chaplain and respond at all hours in some very dark locations.)
    Thanks in advance.

You are right that the map lights are a help but are pretty dim. It’s difficult to find find all my gear ( all dark items for separate departments) which I keep behind the seats.
