Low Oil Pressure... Engine replacement?

Yeah, I can scrap together most of it. Problem is I need a truck and any truck with out 150k-200k miles or that isn't 10+ years old you cant get for under 20k.I figure 11k into this truck is a better value (gamble) than paying 20k for another used truck with 70-100k miles on it.

Its just a bad time in the New/Used market for buyers right now.

 

If it's paid for cut your loss and unload it. Book values are pretty high still on used Tacomas. Then negotiate the difference of the repair. If you're looking at another Tacoma don't bring that up until your out of this one or save it and bring it to the table last. Again unload it, because you will have a huge paperweight, highmilage truck with a newer used engine and a little warranty.

 

Exactly, versus getting a 6 yr old truck which you know the true story of stem to stern. Much wiser choice especially this way.

I have told so many people with even older cars that it's not that you spend money on them..you do yes, but you then have a vehicle you know what's been done. If you sell it and get something comparable you don't necessarily know what's going on. Now if you're selling a 10 plus yr old vehicle to buy new that's another story.

I'd tend to saying your statement is a value..the only gamble per se is the engine you buy, you know everything else you already have. Do it up!

 

So was an engine installed? Or did you dump it? Like other have said I would fix it. You know what you have and it’s always a crap shoot with used vehicles. Unless you know the history of the vehicle being bought.

 

After skimming through the OP's posts I can say this really sucks. Toyota being a multi billion dollar company really should step up to the plate on this one. I have seen Land Rover do more for higher mileage vehicles and they are relatively small in comparison. That being said I wish they lived in CO, I would do the swap for free if he helped me. Would like to hear the end decision.

Seriously OP. Have you got your truck back? Have you made any attempt to heed any of the diy advice and see how things go? It’s not like you have a hole in your block, and if you engine is toast, what’s the worst you’re going to do? I’ve driven cars that were in seemingly worse shape for quite a while.

Also, pulling a complete engine really isn’t that hard. A buddy and I pulled his hydro locked ranger engine and put in one from a junker over the course of a weekend. Tearing into one is a whole different bag. Buy a keg and invite some local rednecks to help with the swap if that’s really necessary.

So, I got a call from Toyota corporate. They contacted last Friday and said they would review my case with the supervisor team. They called back today and offered to pay 40% of parts only, about $5k, which the total invoice minus goodwill coming out to just about 12.3k installed with all new parts minus the heads I believe. Service guy I spoke to said the work would come with a 1 year unlimited mile warranty on workmanship and parts.

I believe going this route will be the best of the options available.

Going to work out the full details tomorrow.

 

Darn. I thought this was going to end with bought a Tesla model s plaid drivetrain off eBay and going to install it in the Tacoma for racing Raptors.

 

I would take that deal too. Esp with the warranty.

 

I would push for a five year warranty. !2 months is too short

 

Dang a 17k repair... that's insane. And not even a new motor. I hate the fact that the engines in these trucks are so insanely expensive. There is no fucking way in hell it costs toyota 25k. I understand they are a business. But 25k is a PORSCHE motor in a 200k car not a minivan motor in a 30-45k truck.

checked locally and plenty of engines around 4-6k mark... but still a roll of the dice and not at a dealer clearly...

I would tell them to shove it!
It’s a very expensive truck and the only reason we buy is because of the expected durability and it didn’t even come close.

I’d check at a wrecking yard and see how much they can get me hooked up with a used engine and they’ll probably get you as good as warranty as the stealer.

 

100 percent I would do a used engine
Some of them seems to have everything on them, you van drop in and good to go to. Even if you need someone to do it for you you can save a ton of money

 

So the Final Repair is $12,400. Replacing the motor with all new parts expect the heads. 1 year unlimited mileage warranty on the work and parts. This included a Toyota corporate goodwill on parts only of about 5k. No additional warranty available through the dealer or Toyota. It would have to be Third party.

Best used motor install option I could find locally after about 4 quotes was $11,000 with a 17k mile motor (Which cost $7k alone) with only a parts warranty for 6 months, no labor warranty. I shopped around and for someone to install the motor was still going to be in the $3k-4K range so even getting a great deal on a used motor I would still be in the 8-10k range with no parts or labor warranty on a used motor.

Total cost breakdown was:

$12,222.65 Parts
$3,307.53 Labor
$1,594.53 Tax
-$4,889.46 Goodwill
$12,401.16 Final Price.

Final Price did include some other misc stuff for about $160.

Not the best outcome but its better than having to sell as is and roll the dice on something Used. At least this is essentially a new motor and the truck itself is in great shape.

The plan is to drive it for 6 months and circle back on if I want to trade in at that point or keep it for a few years and recoup the money I put in.
