When do you turn on your fog lights

Yeah no worries brother. I didn't think ours did that...I actually hated it because every time we got a new "security guard" at the gate at work, they'd always tell me one of my fog lights was burned out (since you have to turn the wheel to get in line for the gate).

Fog and rain or snow only. There's really no benefit otherwise other than the oncoming car may realize your brights aren't on. Saying it helps you see deer may be slightly true, but at speed, seeing them with your fogs vs without isn't going to make a difference because it'll already be way too late. Not to mention if you're used to driving with them all the time, you sort of lose the benefit of their original purpose simply because you're adjusted to always using them instead of just when they're intended to be used.

I've seen the fog light turn on when turning on a few different vehicles. Seeing better when turning is part of crash test safety headlight ratings now. The vehicles that use the fogs for that though lose that feature when you just turn on the fog lights.

    +1

    And within safety reasons.

I forgot to mention the fogs automatically turn off when I engage the high beams.

The auto high beams button was used once or twice on my Sport...they work but I prefer to switch the high beams off when I see approaching traffic.

Some Subaru's come with steering responsive fog lights that double as corning lights.

Well they shine further than 10’… Yes, it might not be enough to make a practical difference but I can see more.

I only use my high beams when I’m off road. I never use them on the road. Unless I’m flashing someone oncoming blinding me with theirs.

    That's cool!

I use my high beams because some streets do not have street lights on my way to work at 5:45am.

    Rarely have mine on.

That drives me nuts! I've noticed now that most of the driving public rely on auto lights, I'm seeing a good amount of folks with their high beams always on or no lights.

Lol same, i take the freeway with no street lights, then all 2 lane for about 40 minutes no lights, I don’t touch my highs. Stock headlights too not leds. I just don’t like my highs on road buecase I hate when people blind me and I know I’d forget too and blind other people.

I keep my fog lights on all the time. I feel it keeps me more visible to on-coming traffic and people that are judging if they should pull out in front of me.

BTW, the fog bulbs have not burned out yet in 53K miles.

I kind of feel the same way but wasn't going to say anything because so many people seem to like them. When do I use them ? Never.
Sometimes I put yellow lamin-x on them to look "cool" (I know, stupid). I just never have had a situation where they improved visibility at all . . . . not even in fog. As far as the brights go - I live in a rural county and only use them at night on the 2 lane hardball because they let me see out a further distance and always douse them if I see someone coming towards me - other wise I never use them.

I was commuting on a rural road daily for a few years, and there was always one jerk that would turn his brights back on just before passing by- it was both inconsiderate and highly irritating as he’d extra blind you doing it. Well, for awhile there were two jerks on the same road doing it as I always had my hand on the switch at the ready to do it back whenever he did it- his was the only car I ever saw on the road… until one day when there was a second one following behind me. Then the jerk came around the corner and High beamed me again- luckily I didn’t do the same because the car behind me did a quick u-turn and flashed on the red and blues. I never had that issue happen again after that day on that road whenever the jerk passed by me.

This is quite irritating...the fact another driver is purposely being a jerk.

And it takes Law Enforcement to straighten them out.

I see it (jerk driving) in other forms of driving:

    - drivers slowing down when being approached from the rear...even when 2-3 car-lengths is given (not tailgating)
    - same drivers merging into a two-lane divided hwy & purposely delaying going into the slow lane/going into fast lane when they should be in the slow lane

Driving is a privilege and remembering what was taught in Driver's Ed should always be applied as one gets older.

Some people shouldn't be given a license (just my opinion) if they are vindictive while driving.

Courtesy (to a certain extent) should always be on the mind which includes yielding--I've had a young driver look right at me when he was at the yield and still cut in front of me. I was about 2 car-lengths and slowing down in my approach because of traffic backed up from stop sign.

Apparently, the young kid didn't look down the road he was about to merge into to realize the reason I was slowing down was because traffic was coming to a standstill.

That happened within the past month but still fresh on my mind and reminds me that only a few drivers make knucklehead moves like that.

Back to the topic...fogs have their purpose.

They may not suit everyone but it doesn't mean their existence is unworthy.

I see so many dudes running their ultra bright yellow fogs when it’s perfectly bright out. Yes we get it, you spent 500$ on them.

I’ve never found fog lights useful. Their implementation is a mystery to me. I don’t understand why lighting up the road 6ft in front of me is useful. On the contrary, it seems to lead to bad habits. You should always be looking ahead of you, not at the ground directly in front of you.

I totally agree, but of course, that is because like you FishaREnekEd, I am also just another old man rambling... Anyway, I too, kept my OEM foglights which are halogen and they are perfect to me. I DID replace my OEM headlights with LEDs, not because i was wanting LEDs, but because i hated the chrome around the headlights. I went with blackened out headlights with clear lens, because of legal concerns in various states. But I have kept the OEM foglights, and have no plans to replace them.
