@Kwikvette this might be a dumb question, but is it normal to not be able to see a damn thing through an electronic welding helmet aside from the arc? I can never follow my joint without stopping every half inch to make sure I'm going the right way

 

Depends how sensitive your eyes are; do you have blue eyes?

I have both my hoods at 9 1/2 when I strike an arc. I can see several things close-by in my peripheral but really I'm never looking anywhere else except my arc.

But are my surroundings completely dark? No they're not to the point where I can't see them.

 

What shade is your helmet when it's darkened? For most lower amperage stuff (sub 180) I use a 9-10 shade), when it isn't darkened its a 4. But if I turn my helmet to say a 12.5 I can't see shit but a dim puddle.

 

I did find with TIG welding stainless I was almost always at a 10 or slightly higher.

But MIG welding I'm always at 9 1/2.

 

I do have blue eyes, but it's more like the helmet doesn't have any variability. It's either shade or completely black, there's no in between. I'm in my driveway in daylight...

 

What hood you running?

Is your lens clean and clear? If not, replace it.

 

9.5 is really the only place it darkens. Anything higher and it's just the off state and I go blind

 

Idk some high rated one on Amazon I got years ago

 

It's probably because you're outside in bright sun and have a ton of light bleed. Might need a cloth around the back of your helmet then cause at 9.5 you should see the arc fine

 

Replace it, your eyes are worth more.

Then again this is why pipe welders run different hoods than ours.

 

The inconsistency of my welds is rediculous lol

Gaps will do that; fitment is absolutely key here.
