That's actually a neat little trick leaving the snow on for the extra weight, I'll actually do that from now on, I usually clear it before moving just never thought of it.

After last year's epic season I was expecting this year to be a dudd, but looking at the long term forecasts it looks like this year will be awesome as well! Not record breaking but certainly looks to be above average, can't wait :)

    Where?

Living in Colorado I have yet to see a trail that a good pair of tires or Maxtrax/Treds cant get through

You honestly think chains are less destructive than mud tires? Does a side by side weigh over 5000-6000 pounds?

You can be offended all you want, this type of ignorance is exactly why these roads are closed off.

EDIT: You can do what you want brother but remember what I said the next time you want to head down a trail that Rangers have gated due to "errosion."

Well, the snow weight traction trick works well after a snow dump and I figured it out quite by accident. The real reason why I started doing it is because I'm lazy and would rather not shovel snow, so why push it off the car onto your drive and then have to shovel it out of the way afterwards? :)

If you only have one set of chains: I get that putting chains on the engaging tires is key. Does this matter whether you're going uphill or downhill the majority of the driving? One concern is turning while going downhill and chains are on the rear on a RWD.

Rear is best with only one set of chains if you have RWD or 4x4 -you really don't want to get passed by your ass on ice!

Reminds me of last winter here in SoCal...took my girlfriend on our 2nd date up to Big Bear on the day of the biggest snow storm they'd seen in 10 years (late January). By the time we went to leave that night, it was like hell froze over and the apocalypse had started. It was a nightmare, cars and trucks (even some really well built 4x4's) were stuck EVERYWHERE and you couldn't see the roads at all. I somehow managed to navigate us through it all using nothing but 4hi and a lot of momentum in some parts. We had chains with us but I never put them on. That was my first experience driving in snow, too. I couldn't believe we made it out of there, looking back it was fun I guess...not so much at the time though, lol.

Here in quebec Road hunting will get your license cancelled, truck seized and a big fine. Even if the engine is off you cant shoot from a wheeled vehicle, even if its off road.

Would a different off-set wheel work for front chains? I sure wanted them the other week going down a steep icey grade with big drop offs.

Just buy a pair of studded tires if Ya want to run them on the front. You can still run chains on the rear. Yeah it will take a couple of minutes to swap out and Ya have to carry an extra spare but at 30mph or lower what difference is a few minutes gonna make?

Because packing 3 extra wheels/tires is nuts. Lol.
So different off sets wouldn't clear the knuckle & UCA?

nothing new about "road hunting" in CO, it was common in the late '60's when I lived there.

OP update for 2023! Been running Les Schwab chains on the front every year since 2017, it works great.

Just not feasible. My taco is my hunting rig. Its usually packed with dog boxes & gear. I hunt chukars quite a bit. Which means getting in/out of STEEP country in the winter.
Really just trying to find a way to clear chains on front.
3"lift & all pro bumper on front so tire rub isnt an issue. Just dont want to tear out my steering or UCA. Was hoping different wheel offset would solve my concern.
