This is a Presa Canario; I had never heard of this breed until more than 20 years ago when a woman in San Francisco lost control of her two dogs, who viciously mauled the woman's neighbor to death in the hallway of their apartment building. The woman who was killed about as old as I am now, and both dogs ended up getting euthanized; I had never seen a Presa Canario in person until I met this one at the Pet Expo yesterday. He weighed in at a whopping 162 pounds!

 

Like with pretty much every breed, it's not the dog, but the two-legged animal at the other end of the leash. The owners were a husband and wife, and while the dog was incredibly protective of the wife, years of careful training and socialization have made this guy very well-behaved and docile in public. I was allowed to pet him, and he was just as friendly as any other dog. Let's just say that wouldn't want to come into their house at night uninvited...

 

I feel like an idiot, but I forget the Presa Canario's name; I believe it was Dane, but I don't remember...



Anyway, he was not overly energetic or playful, but he did not show the slightest bit of aggression to Porter...

 

Porter met yet another Seeing Eye Dog in training, this one a Black Labrador like himself!

 

Dane the 162-pound Presa Canario again, just chillin'...

 

This is even more proof that the fearsome reputations some breeds earn are a load of shit. There was this couple, who also happened to be Doberman Pinscher breeders, there with their dogs. Both of these dogs were incredibly friendly, well socialized, and better-behaved than Porter!

This is a female Pit Bull named Prada who was rescued from a dog fighting ring; I believe she is actually an American Bully based on her size and build, but she her owner seemed pretty that she was a Pit Bull. Regardless, she was not a fighting dog, but rather a bait dog who was used to train fighting dogs. This is even more disgusting in my opinion.

The owner started out as a foster parent and then ended up permanently adopting her after falling in love; Prada's exact past is not 100% known, but as you can see she lost an ear and was horrifically burned. It is not known how she was burned, but while some of her fur has grown back, it is not expected to grow back fully. Despite the horrific treatment Prada went through before being rescued, you would never know it. She is incredibly friendly, showing no distrust whatsoever of humans or other dogs...

 

Prada's fur was grayish blue with a white "racing stripe" along her belly and head, as illustrated by her remaining fur in these pictures...

 

Prada and Porter got along very well!

This Silver Labrador has a story extraordinarily similar to Porter's. He was a puppy mill dog who didn't sell, and a nonprofit rescue took him in. Like Porter, he wasn't horrifically abused but just neglected, and a result missed out on a socialization period that is critical to developing puppies. He was not displaying behavior typical of a Labrador puppy and it took awhile for him to let me pet him...

 

He did seem to like Porter though!
