so i was considering installing a CB radio and i was thinking about a small sized one that would fit in the pocket in front of the cupholders.

    as seen here:

the radio is 6.75 inches deep and with the coax plugged into in the back, i know that i would have to cut an opening in that pocket to accomodate it.

    so, my question is:
how much space is there behind that pocket?

in this pic there is a collection of wires, but its hard to tell how much space there is from the bottom of the pocket to the wires.

i know i could take it all apart myself to find out, but if someone knows, it would be extremely helpful :)

    thanks

When I go in a wreck a few yrs back I was told that, that wire harness you have circled in yellow has something to do with the air bags(b/c they had to change it out since the air bag deployed).....My truck was a 2005,and yours is a 2010 and they may have changed things around.....who knows?....can anyone clarify this?.......Good luck!

my thought would be instead of putting it on the place you have an arrow to... put it on the plastice that is vertical (just to the left of the arrow in the picture) and you could probably flush mount it in that location

ya... i just chekced that out in my truck. i took out the cupholders and was able to feel around inside. those yellow wires are definately against the bottom part of that pocket. however, it does look like there is room behind the "vertical" part that you mentioned. that would be a challenging mounting location (for me), but it would be the most funcational location.
the space behind the vertical part looks to be here. i would have to take it apart to be sure though.

i was also looking at the space under the armrest. that is a super easy mounting location, but far less functional than in front of the cup holders.

i actually have mine right their in the center console where you arrow is. I use mine all the time, its easy to get to. Only thing is you may have to cut a little off the metal support bracket thats under the console. But either way thats a good option to place the CB.

Those yellow wires are airbag wires. Don't touch, don't even look at them. Infact forget I even sent this to you. I say this because I have had my airbag light come on twice when using the 12V plugs on my 1999. Alll I do is plug in something too hard into those sockets(on a 1999 you may be different) and the darn airbag light blinks. I take them out, remove console, unplug the 12V sockets from the power, wait 5 minutes and reinstall it back to factory ...BINGO no more air bag light.

What did you end up doing? I want to mount my ham radio right there. I was going to drill two holes. One for the coax and the other for the power wires.

Also. How do you take that plastic off?

Does your amateur rig have a remote mount head kit available?

The head is the faceplate/controls. Most modern radios allow you to remove the faceplate, and most of those also allow you to buy an extension kit that lets you mount the faceplate wherever you want.

You could put the body of the radio under the seat or anywhere else, and just have the controls mounted someplace visible.

Oh. No I don't think so. It's pretty small as is. I'm set on mounting in this location regardless. Thanks though.

Anyone know how to take apart the console? I know how to take off the shifter area. Never messed with the forward section.

Part of the reason I ask is that it is not a good idea to put radio transmitting equipment right next to airbag control units and harnesses.

It's bad enough with a 4 watt AM CB, but most amateur equipment puts out at least 40-60 watts.

Interference caused by any impedence mismatch or leakage can cause unpredictable malfunctions. It could do nothing, or it could set a trouble code, or it could deploy your airbags when you key down.

Amateur radio installation guides typically suggest not running power or signal wires parallel to vehicle sensor or signal wires, especially the SRS (airbag) system. If you have to cross SRS wires, try to do it at a right angle (reducing any possible inductive interference).

If you have a detachable face unit, you can put the face in that space. But there is NOT enough room to cut away and install an entire transceiver there.

To remove it, remove the cup holders and any additional rubber/plastic to reveal the bolts that must be removed. Remove the bolts and pop the plastic fasteneres.
