Are access cab Tacomas not that popular?

That's actually kind of funny and some truth to it. I have an AC, and I also have a two door Jeep Wrangler, which the two door Jeeps use to be what the single, fun guys drove. When the four door Wranglers came along they were what the married with children had to buy.

 

DC is great for dog platform in backseat if you have dogs. I don't care if you have AC or not. It is a personal decision for anyone to get AC or DC based on their needs.

 

4dr with the 8' bed would be long. I like the super cab 8' bed 150s and Super Duties. I don't need a crew cab or 8' bed. The 145" super cab is probably the most practical configuration for myself and most people. Accescab 6' bed is the best compromise it's the same length as DCSB. I do like the regular cabs more.

I like the look of the Ram Mega Cab with the 8' bed, but I don't need a truck that big.

Geezus, you sound like my brother in law who asks to borrow my truck because he doesn't want to get his 1/2 ton RAM truck bed dirty picking up a load of topsoil. Only in North America do ignorant people feel the need to own a truck to buy a 2x4 once a year.
Married late 40's dad here who owns an AC as our only vehicle (besides bicycles, which along with smaller vehicles ignorant people also consider "toys".)
Look at my avatar. You can have a kid and be married and have a great life AND have an access cab.
There's a poster in my classroom that has 21 tips for a happy life. #1 is marry the right person; this will determine 90% of your happiness or misery. I've seen lotsa miserable guys my age who aren't married and don't have kids.
How else do you propose getting a fuel efficient, manual transmission 4X4 that you can use as a work truck or sleep in (you can't)?
If you and your partner are not 6'5" and/or 220lbs plus, you can easily fit a family of 3 comfortably in the AC. I've been doing it for 5 years. Things will probably change when my son hits 12 or 13, but we'll cross that bridge when we get there.

We used own a construction/excavating company. Honestly even fullsizes were worthless for what we used to do, good for servicing the bigger trucks and equipment, running to get parts and lunch, that is about it. Our old house had a gravel driveway that was about 1/4 mile long, can’t even imagine how many trips to the quarry it would take in a 1 Tonner with an 8’ bed. Where it was two trips in our Tri-Axle Mack, wouldn’t even have to shovel it, just tailgate it out.

If we had kids, no way I would do a Tacoma no matter the cab figuration. A 4WD Sprinter or Transit for sure, or a minivan at least (could give two shits what people think), why suffer!? Work smarter not harder! and that is coming from a guy who grew up in 70s RC F250, it was shear joy when my dad would slam the stick of that gawd awful BorgWarner 4 speed into my knee when all four us were in the cab.

Heh, I know exactly what you're talking about. We got rid of our bench seat Mazda B2300 after a few 12 hour trips with the wife straddling the transmission tunnel and the gearshift between her knees and the rear facing child seat in the passenger seat.
Vans are great, I love them, but there are logistical reasons I haven't ferries, needing a bed for aggregates.

That bench seat was awful. We also had a 70s F350 dump, absolutely miserable with three guys in the cab. When we became teens, my dad bought a 1 Ton conversion van, plus my mom had a Jeep Grand Wagoneer. They are much better people movers, then the F250 was demoted to mainly a firewood hauler.

30 years ago I started buying Toyota’s because it was nice to jump in something small to run around in after sitting on earthmoving equipment all day long. And I know hardcore Toyota guys hate hearing that they are useless for work, sure you can do it, but why? Any serious hauling I would grab either our 2.5 Ton Chevy Dump or the Mack R Series.

These days, I’ll just pay someone else to do it. Don’t want to scratch the bed of my Taco.

 

I will offer that a Tacoma is not a true “utility” pickup truck. My 78 Ford F-250 supercab with a torque 460 cubic inch engine died from a big tree falling on the cab during an ice storm. My 1998 single cab F150 died when a tree fell on it at car show parking lot during a quick thunderstorm -just when I really needed the 8ft bed space. Shame, that Ford was a manual, very nice and and very quiet. My Tacoma has been through many ice and thunder storms with no tree falls on it.

 

Best of both worlds here. Wife has a DCSB Sport premium with some OR mods and a tonneau ; I have an AC Off-road with various TRD mods. Both are MT, and can navigate the “trail” to the cabin and over snowy mountain passes.
If we are travelling together, or with friends or (adult) children, hers is great. Hers also provides secure-ish and dry storage for luggage and “stuff.” Mine rarely has a passenger, and the back is big enough for rifles, packs and snacks for me and the occasional hunting buddy. The longer bed is a must for an elk or moose, and also handy for outdoor equipment.

She could probably do great with a 4-Runner, but the current generation (her Taco is a 2019) Runner isn’t as nice inside, nor does it have some of the features of the 3rd Gen.
And, she wants a manual for as long as they are available….hence the Tacoma.

 

I didn't realize Land Rover sold the Defender 90 here it's the 2dr version. I don't want one, but at least they will sell you a 2dr SUV. Hey Toyota there is a market for 2dr SUV in the US. Land Rover, Jeep, and Ford have taken noticed.

It's only those three SUV, and soon to be GM and Ford 1/2 tons, and GM Ford and Ram HD. Those will be the only 2dr BOF new vehicles sold in the US.

 

I bought this exact style truck for my house renos and move.

It was a tank! Even came with air ride and bed insert. Probably the best truck I ever owned. I moved 4 sets of tires, a law mower, and a bike in one run. Safely no less!

 

Man, no offense, but your kid looks to be about 2'5" and his knees are nearly touching the seat. He can't even hold his book properly. My son wears a size 12 shoe at the age of 13. Zero chance he fits in the back of that.

 

I still want to get one of these before the next gen comes out.

I'm the other end here of the spectrum. RC 2WD. Bought it when I was 38 and I'm pushing 50. I came from a Chevy Colorado which was also a RC.

Married, no kids. If we go out with other people we either take the Rav4 or drive another person's vehicle. As a homeowner I have periodic need for a truck, not constant though. My truck has the 2.7 so it's decent fuel mileage.

I have a desk job and drove an hour round trip to the office for 7 years. Past 3 years I work from home.
