Hey guys, I come to you in another time of need. I have a 2003 Toyota Tacoma 4x4 SR5, the truck is in amazing condition but the original owner of the truck did a super bad frame respray. Obviously when purchasing the truck I asked him why only some parts of the frame were sprayed, he told me that he was just trying to prevent any rust from forming. As far as I can see there is no substantial rust anywhere on the truck... except one spot. The front section of the frame just behind the IFS has a good amount of surface rust inside of the frame rail. I'm gonna try to bore scope the level of rust but from I can see its only surface. This has been a California truck its whole life so I'm pretty surprised that its showing this amount of rust.

The question for all of you guys, what are my options at this point. I want to nip this thing in the butt as fast as I can. I know this topic has been talked about to death on this forum but as far as I can see no ones come up with a solution for removing surface rust on the inside. Any ideas? What has worked for you guys in the past? What would happen if I say... paint over the surface rust. I'm trying to keep this truck the rest of its life so the best long term solution would be awesome. Thanks gents, tell me what you think.

I had a similar situation with mine. The rust was not all that bad inside the frame but there was some there. I used a hammer and knocked on the frame everyplace I could to loosen any flaking and a long screwdriver to scrape where I could.
I then sprayed a heavy coat of Fluid Film everywhere including the outside. Did this years ago and repeat annually. Frame is nice and black with a soft heavy coating that assures me it is really protected from moisture. There are many fans of Fluid Film out here in addition to some other products. Don't just paint it, not a good long-term solution in my opinion.

Thanks for your story, I think that I'm going to try to use some sort of bristle attachment on a drill in order to remove the rust. I also have a handheld sandblaster but I'm not sure if I would be able to get the sand out of the frame. How have you checked for rust on the inside of frame besides just a visual inspection? I wonder where most of the frame rust happens on these trucks, for some reason only the front section of my frame has rust on it. Makes no sense but it is what it is!
