It is known as the "Mojave Megaphone," and is located just off the old Tidewater & Tonopah grade between Ludlow and Baker -- specifically about three miles south of Crucero.

You can find several narratives regarding its purpose online, ranging from mining, to military testing, to extraterrestrial origins. I didn't know anything about it before arriving, other than that it was a point of interest on my map. I'm quite certain it's an art installation, and it's fun and interesting to visit even without a far-fetched backstory.

It is maybe 8 feet in length -- so it's big, but not as big as it looks in pictures.

Another photo from the area, just for fun:

    DSC03536s.jpg

Some stretches of the T&T grade still have ties in place. The line was torn up by 1943.

Here’s another TW thread that may peak some interest:

It’s an All-in-one like you said. It came with a remote fob, but I never had to adjust it. I had it on the lowest setting the whole time and it was really cozy. I don’t think I could turn it up at all with the size of my tent without it turning into a sauna.

This was my first time using it, so it wasn’t the greatest setup. Next time I am going to mount it better on a tire table or something and have it covered.

Thanks! I ended up with a Hcalory all-in-one; tried it a bit ago and it works excellently; I got the bluetooth version. Kept my topper-lift-tent thing warm to the point i was sweating at times during the night.

What kind of hitch apparatus is that? What does it do? Do they make other kinds of swinging hitch appliances?

I bought it used. Main purpose is to swing bikes out of the way. The one up bike rack only swings down, so it's always in the way. The Rigd I have has the fold down table/cutting board, a tire mount, and a SideHack to mount things to like fuel cells, a jack, or Maxtrax. It's quite expensive new, so I was stoked to find it used. It's very solid.. I bought it from a friend who does some serious overloading and no issues at all!
