I'm sure they would, but I'm not interested in using spacers or having my tires sticking out anymore than they already do.
I'm still baffled why the bypass version wouldn't have this restriction. I'll try contacting Bilstein but I doubt I'll get any real answers.

Oh there will be some mods all right
I also am quite confused about that. One would think that if anything the bypasses would be the chunkier of the 2 and have the backspacing requirements.

    Yeah, very weird.

I have a few emails back and forth with Mr. Africa and others at Bilstein and got very vague answers regarding my very specific detailed questions. :pccoffee::annoyed:

I find nowadays getting a knowledgeable answer from anyone is like winning the lottery. Almost always just a copy and paste from a brochure.

Talked to the shop where I'm buying my Bilstein setup. They said they did extensive testing with the smooth body 8100 on their 3rd gen Tacoma that was running Methods with a 4.75" backspacing and 33's with no issues whatsoever.
I'm ordering them and I will update when they're installed.

Sounds what about the 2nd gen Tacoma?
The wheel that I want to put in is the trd beadlock 16’ inch the tires are going to to be 265/75r16 it’s also a 4.75 wheel

As I can tell from the pictures the smooth body look chunkier and straight like a stock shock and the bypass looks just a tad slimmer and a different position

I got an answer from Bilstein:

OEM wheels will work with OEM tire size. If a larger tire is used on an OEM wheel it may contact the larger 60mm body when the axle articulates due to the higher offset. Any after market wheel with offset should clear with no issues.
A dealer of mine recently did a shock shootout and most if not all rear shocks were 2.5" - 60mm bodies, he used a 4.75" BS wheel and it cleared all shock options that he tested.

I specified 3rd Gen in my question; not sure if 2nd Gen would be any different.
They also mentioned that clearance for the bypass version would be roughly the same since the body is the same size. Obviously there are tubes involved but they appear to not face towards the wheel.

Well I got an idea and that is I measured my wheel and it’s 4 5/8 which is only 1/8 of a difference considering the maximum with of the tire is 285 on 4.5 backspace So I did some math and 1/8 is 3.175 mm so the tire that I want is 265 (mm) and the maximum on the 4.5 backspace is (285) difference in that is 20 (mm) so I believe I got 16.825 (mm) wiggle room and then I got to consider the flex on the the wheel rear wheels when I go off-roading which I don’t how far the tire/wheel flexes

More info from Bilstein (pic is theirs):

"...the bigger concern is the banjo fitting on the smooth body shock. When testing clearance’s with a stock wheels and 265/75/16 it came 3mm away from contacting the banjo with the tire fully articulated (photo below) the reservoir on the bypass is not in the same location so the concern was not there."

So that explains the clearance concern, and the difference between the smooth vs bypass. I'll update when I get mine installed.

Ahhh okay. That makes more sense. Thank you for posting. If I do end up going with these shocks I'll probably put proper hubcentric wheel spacers on for peace of mind since I prefer sticking with OEM wheels and a little poke would look good anyway.

I wonder if that is on stock height?
What about on a 1 inch lift? Rear

IIRC Bilstein specifically made these shocks for the stock leaf pack. Your miles may vary on the aftermarket lift option you chose to run. Ex) block, AAL, New leaf pack.

According to them it was stock height and stock wheels.

Well I’m going to try it out since I believe it would work my wheel is literally 1/8 off from there 4.5 backspace recommendation so my wheels backspace is 4.64 which is not too bad but just in case it don’t work out I decided to add wheel spacers but only on the rear and it’s only going to be 1/4 inch spacers if it don’t look right then I’m going to add the front as well…..Also since I already ordered the 8100 smooth body shocks I’m not going install them just yet I will provide a pic on my truck for comparison on existing wheel/tire
