Preventing gas theft

Ever try and carry 20 gallons of gas?

 

Cameras might let you know who did it but some judge will slap their hand and send them on their merry way. Best option might be a dog.

 

Just dont bring the mindset with you when you do move.

 

Years ago, a lady I know had an issue with this. They stole the gas out of her driveway numerous times. Certainly Years ago, a lady I know had a issue with this. This was back in the 80s, I can say it solved her gas theft issue.

 

Buy a house with a garage. It's probably the only way to avoid such things in your crime sanctuary state.

When the authorities catch people that do stuff like this is the lack of any real punishments that encourages it. No jail time, no restitution payments, very little fines if any and back out to do it again. It is also attitudes that it's not the person's fault for committing theft and other property crimes because they have to to survive poverty.

 

IF they do more than take a report over the phone..

 

Unfortunately, criminals have rights now. Can't hurt the guy that's trying to steal from you lol. But yeah, that would be a funny video to watch.

 

Imo, if they want your gas bad enough they will get it. If you can just deter them in some manor, they will find any easier target.

 

Garage or a gated neighborhood are the only physical solutions I can think of.

Motion-sensing security lights in the driveway might help, and have the added bonus of giving you some visibility when leaving or arriving in the dark.

 

Based on these comments, crime just started and it's only in California. Heck, even soldiers steal from other soldiers. That's why one of the first things your learn in basic is to secure your stuff. Crime is everywhere and always has been. Rich, poor, physical, virtual and everything in between.

We are now inundated with information. Social media, Ring, Nextdoor, this forum.

Do what you can to prevent and go about your day. If someone really wants your stuff, they will do whatever they can to take it.

 

Yes, there is crime in most places, but it's rampant in others. I live outside city limits in a nice area where everyone is on 2 acres. No one is here that shouldn't be, and it's risky as hell for someone to go up acres of property to get to a car. I cant remember any incidents of crime here, even though I'm sure you'll find instances near the city center. I chose to be here for a reason. If you choose to be where there's crime, that's on you.

 

Not everyone has the means to just pack up and move out of a bad neighborhood. Saying that living in a high crime area is simply "a choice" is a little tone deaf

You are not stopping a thief who is determined to steal fuel. You could relocate the fuel tank, reinforce it, blah blah blah.

But for a nice new vehicle, not much to reasonably do other than park in a safe location and garage if at all possible.

 

Get a outdoor camera and well lit area. If they steal gas at least you have pictures and videos. Most theif will stay away from house with security cameras.

 

They tried to drill open my $10 locking gas cap on my 1st Gen but failed, so they drilled the side of my gas tank- 1st gen OR’s have OEM steel skids on the bottom of their steel gas tanks. I don’t use locking gas caps anymore. It doesn’t really matter what you do now with 3rd gens because there are three easy ways and places where someone can get gas out of your plastic tank.

I keep a Harbor Freight driveway monitor on the side of my truck at night. It has a magnet attached to the back so I can take it off easily. It’ll trigger the alarm sensor more than 100’ in my bedroom. If you use one, keep it up high on your truck so cats don’t set it off. I keep mine on the gas door. If anyone sees it, the red light on it will tell them that they’ve already been noticed.

 

Where are you in the Mojave that this is a major concern?
