New Taco - First Oil Change?

It meets all the same specifications as name brand oils and all the certifications Toyota requires same as the other brands. Even meets GM Dexos. I don't see a problem. It's made by Warren distribution a well known company too. You just aren't paying for the brand name, advertising and racing sponsorships.

You must be thinking of that Dollar General oil that only met a decades old specification they were selling for a while.

New vehicles, I change oil at 500, 1500 and 3000
I then change every 3000-5000 max

My 06 Tacoma "Needs Service" light comes on every 5,000 miles and that is when I change the oil. Faithfully now for 17 years and 180,000 miles. So far, so good.
Te Service Light is the same for newer Tacoma's?

 

I heard the exact same thing AMD said from ford mechanics when I was researching that ecoburner engine they put in rangers. Between VVT, low tension piston rings and direct injection you want to change your oil more often, not less. People will do what they want, but I'm going to continue to do what has worked for me in every car, truck, tractor, motorcycle, side by side and mower I've owned. I changed the oil and filter @ 1000 on my Tacoma and I'll do it again @ 5k and every 6k after that.

 

Went in a few weeks early for my 6 month/8000 km (5000 miles) first service; and was at about 7000 km. Paid to have an oil and filter change. It’s seen some severe duty (dusty roads, trailering…after the run-in period of course, and some short trips at minus 20) so the “extra” change seemed warranted.
Not all that expensive, so no real downside.

BTW: might be different down south, but oil change intervals aren’t “in the manual” that came with my 2022. The Warranty booklet notes that maintenance is required every 6 months or 8000 km, whichever comes first. The actual service schedule was provided to me as a printout from the dealer. That is the only place the 16,000 km (10,000 mile) oil change interval appears.

 

I have a 99’ that I put the cheapest oil I can find in it and change it when the old stuff leaks out enough I have to add to it lol. Ole buddy has 362k on it still running strong. I’ve got around 4K on this oil change so far.

 

One thing to remember…..

The recommended 10k oil service schedule is the MINIMUM to keep your Taco maintained.

Oil is cheap, change it often.

 

I would never trust any dealer with any work. Had multiples issues with other cars and dealers and so did a bunch of my friends.
When I first bought my 21 Tacoma dealer tried really hard to sell me the extended warranty. I told him no thanks because I will wood the warranty on day 1. Could not care less about any warranty. I do all my work myself.
first oil change was at 1000. All others every 5000

 

The service light reminder at every 5k miles is for tire rotation not oil changes.

 

That’s unfortunate; I have had excellent service at the dealer in Nelson (BC) and that’s one of the reasons we have bought 3 Tacos from them in 4 years. YMMV.

 

Trust……but verify.

 

Human error at its finest. I'm even more motivated to do every other oil change myself at the 5k. This way the dealer will be documenting thier change for warranty purposes and I'll be doing what I feel is best on my end.

I intend to do diff fluids at 5k myself too. I replaced the front axle bearing with ECGS when I added 5100's on 4th notch. I was surprised how dirty the gear oil was when I pulled the axle..... only 529 miles on truck. I wish I took a pic. I used to never believe in break in oil.... I'm becoming more of a believer.

 

When my truck was 1 year old I had the weeping rearend addressed under a TSB. When I changed my fluids I discovered no crush washer on the drain plug. Luckily it was not leaking. I hate the Tech human errors that are difficult to visually spot. I know anyone can make a human error, but I work slow and double check everything when I work on my truck.

 

Agreed. I take my time and double check things too.... not in a race chasing a dollar. Having said that, I know there are some great mechanics out there.

 

It is human nature to complain more than praise. You are absolutely right about some great mechanics out there. I know some. I just worry about my “luck of the draw” and getting a not great mechanic touching my truck.

 

I did my first at 2500 after the break in. There was a sheen in the oil from engine break in. Have done this with every vehicle I have owned and every one had finings in the oil after break in. I personally prefer to have an additional oil change expense and be certain than roll the dice. I change every 5k religiously.
