Right, and the point of "EVs are too expensive" statements isn't that you can't afford any EV, it's that you to match an ICE vehicles capabilities you have to spend WAY more. The Bolt is the cheapest EV you can get at a bit over $26K and you can spend $10K less for a Kia Rio, or if you want to "buy American" you can spend $13K less on a Spark. Nobody driving a Tacoma is trading in for a Spark because the Spark won't do what they need/want, and they won't trade for an EV for the same reason.

You can pick up a Nissan Leaf for about $22k or a Tesla 3 for $31k. Similar in price and capabilities to a Corolla hatchback or Camry sedan.

 

Range. No EV of similar price matches the "equivalent" standard car. There's an article from a guy with a Nissan Leaf and it took him over 10 hours to make a trip from Cheyenne to Casper (Wyoming) because of the charging. That's a 2-2.5 hour drive in a regular car.


EVs are fantastic for urban environment and are great for reducing smog in dense population areas like SLC and it's infamous inversions, but out in open country where lots of miles need to be covered.... they just aren't there yet.

MPGs are going up every year too. Carbon emissions are going down every year.


And the leading EV maker says charging fast and running low with regularity is bad. Now, this is anecdotal, but so is a high mileage EV. I would guess that the super aggressive charge of adding a 100 miles in 5 minutes is going to be really bad for a battery. Again, it's cool and would work for people who only go on a long drive a few times a year, but I personally have to have a vehicle that can make 300-700 mile trips in a 2 day window on a regular basis, and I have even needed to make a 1200 mile trip in 18 hours before. That kind of stuff is completely outside the reach of any EV we currently have or anything forecast in the next decade, which is about when the mandates will have forced companies to go full on EV for the majority of their lines.

This tech is perfect for the everyday commuter and non long distance traveler. These batteries are designed for fast charging unlike the screenshot you took about Tesla fast charging.

 

Going 300 miles is doable on a single charge for a number of EVs. A 700 mile drive would end up being about an hour longer in an EV to account for two charge stops. 1200 miles in 18 hours - not so much though. Long distances in a minimal amount of time is not as easy with an EV right now.

 

In best case scenarios, yes. But add wind, elevation, multiple passengers/cargo, and cold temps. That 300 miles, the minimum requirement, becomes unattainable. None of the 300+ mile EVs are economically priced, either.

EVs have their place/role, but they cannot feasibly replace ICE passenger vehicles for many driver's needs.

 

Add in elevation, wind, cold weather and my Tacoma couldn’t get me 300 miles either. Especially Kansas winds, brutal on the fuel economy every time I make the drive back east. A whole lot faster to fill up along the way though.

Food for thought, EVs cannot be a truly viable replacement for ICE vehicles until a technology other than lithium based battery cells is invented or if unless we magically invent a way to recycle lithium extremely efficiently and cost effectively.

None of this will happen in our life time.

Also ICE vehicles last much much longer until needing to be scrapped and that alone makes EVs not that eco-friendly, also the fact that folks are charging their EVs with electricity coming from burning coal etc.

EVs arent green.
