Today while doing an oil change, I noticed some normal corrosion on the battery tie-down. After removing it and cleaning it up, I found an excessive amount of corrosion under the battery and tray itself. The battery is newer, the terminals are clean and all the grounds look solid. Is there anything else I should be looking for or can do to further prevent this from happening again? Once it warms up I plan on cleaning and priming everything.

With the amount of paint discoloration that almost looks like the battery split and was leaking acid.

    Yeah.
Is there not a plastic tray that sits on top of that metal part? I think that should catch most anything that happens to spill out, which should be minimal.

Not sure what the weather is like where you are, but if mine looked like that, I’d dump a water/baking soda mixture all over it, scrub with a brush, rinse and let it dry. Then I’d Fluid Film the-shit-out-of-it and wait to see how it looks in the spring....

I already doused it with battery cleaner/neutralizer and rinsed it repeatedly. But yea I will be addressing it quickly.

Was there or is there a vent on the battery on that right side? I'm thinking if the battery can spill or boil a bit and it leaks out the side vent maybe there should be a drain tube attached. They are are on motorcycles. I haven't taken possession of my Taco yet but I'll look into this as soon as I get it. Rust never sleeps!

Could be a spill if you did any aggressive off-roading.

My factory battery spilled while at fun angles on some Colorado trails. Luckily, I had to pop the hood to air back up and smelled the acid. Caught it early enough to prevent much damage.
I replaced the spilled acid with distilled water. Now, battery & surrounding area inspection is part of normal maintenance!

(I am still running that same original factory battery six years later.)
