Dealership left cap off after oil change

To each their own.

Yes I do suppose I check the engine is still there and all the parts.

Any time someone does any service work I inspect things before I leave the place of service.

Every time I fuel the truck the oil gets checked .Under the hood gets inspected for things that stand out.

If not everyday for sure within 2 days.

I have had 3 new Trucks in the last 15 years, All treated the same .

 

If you saw; I said make a long story short... I am always one to give a second chance and to give everyone a level of respect by default. You can add to or subtract from it. I am unfortunately very aware of human shortcoming, myself included. You dont know the whole story or a prior story either, so you don't have a good perspective on writing them off or calling them names or judging what level of respect they do or not deserve. And they CERTAINLY did NOT go out of their way to correct the issue. It is not a low move to mention this, in this exact post or this forum in general. That's why they are here. I didn't name a specific dealership nor individual. It is not a huge or even tiny/minor "tantrum" to say I will never go somewhere again. Toughen up a bit.

 

A prudent reminder for all of us to perform a visual inspection after every service appointment and before every long trip. While this certainly isn’t OP’s fault, ultimately (unfortunately), it is the owner’s responsibility.

The oil drains from the heads right into the oil pan, it gets filtered after its pumped by the oil pump.

There is a screen on the oil pump that would of stopped any large particles from getting into the motor, but any silt in the oil would of gotten pumped right into the filter.

 

Thank you for answering the question. As an update the dealership was understanding. The head of maintenance took me to the shop and let me observe while they worked on my truck. The oil was drained and we inspected the filter there were some particles so it was flushed, refilled, checked, drained again, new filter checked and then refilled with again another new filter. I was also assured if there were any issues after this to bring it in and I will be taken care of. Like people have said as well as the manager said people make mistakes. They made the mistake of forgetting the cap and I made the mistake of trusting with no verify. I was able to take photos and it’s in my service notes everything is documented and they made sure everything was corrected. Also as someone said before yes the cap was free as well as the work they did.

Very plausible.
An oil change is no different than any other service.
You should not need to verify that a job was done correctly.
And you should not need to check the oil level every time you fill up with fuel.

As for OP, he’s in a bit of an awkward situation.
Normally, this would be a huge deal. But he says sand is on the dip stick.
That’s BAD, really bad.

It’s an oil change, it’s simple, you should not have to verify anything.

 

It’s a 2021 he’s taken to the dealer for oil changes. It’s not out of the realm of possibilities not to pop the hood for a couple months. Hell mine is a 2016 with 50k miles. I wouldn’t be surprised if I’ve done the same.

These aren’t 1980 dodge colts with 200k miles you have to constantly check the oil on.

 

I got bitten once driving a car over 700 miles after a dealer visit. I looked under the hood a day or two later found rags and can of brake cleaner on top of engine. 30 years ago and I’m still remembering that

 

Great advice here! I had a colonoscopy a couple of months ago. I guess I should check it out myself to confirm the service was done correctly.

Glad the dealership took the time to assist as best they could and get you replacement oil cap. (OEM or TRD oil cap?)

Now it's time to get some "Hood Struts!" And maybe an OTT Tune! lol

I'm trying to make "buying hood struts" as appealing as possible to assist with opening that hood (in case the weight of it makes it an undesirable task).

The tune...I suggest driving a year before getting one.

In the end, a valuable lesson was learned. All the best moving forward with your truck.

Reading numerous stories like these on this and other forums, I really make a conscious effort to check over my truck before and after service at anyplace that works on my truck. Just because it says Toyota on the building, doesn’t mean they are immune to careless mistakes. As soon as I use up my included oil changes , Im going to do everything I can myself. ‘Trust, but verify’ as they say.

 

I installed Redline hood struts and man what a difference when opening the hood it just goes up by itself. Great investment and worth it for some of us old guys.

 

Why not DIY?

 

I once had a catch edge sheet. I still remember the pain.

 

Because I am afraid to google “how to” given the subject matter.

In all seriousness, I usually do services myself when possible because I have issues trusting that services are done properly. Some cars though are difficult to self-service and are also difficult to verify the work was done properly.
