I stopped at a red light. left turn lane. When the light went green I could not get out of neutral. Other drivers were really angry. I told my son we must get out of this intersection. Get out and push. We eventually got thru the intersection and made it to the side of the road where I called the tow truck. We were in Tampa and I had to cross the bay $200.00 So I get home and decided to force it into first. The truck never moved but started to smoke, rattle and stink. So 8 months later my brother offered to help. We determined slave cylinder was good and guessed clutch kit. Horrible experience. But I am happy to have my truck back.

I'm still on the original clutch @ 192k miles. Also battery going on 8.1/2 years. I guess I'm easy on my vehicles

I know it sucks. I’ve replaced my clutch twice, had it get stuck in 4th and replaced the seal on my hydro bearing. But after pulling my transmission 4 times and doing 2 other clutches in 2nd gens I’m getting way faster at it.

    I can confirm.

Production vehicles from the beginning up until around 2012 had two clutch suppliers: Luk and Aisin. And for replacement parts Toyota catalogs listed a choice of either Type 'A' or Type 'B' clutches. The Type 'A' were Luk and Type 'B' were Aisin.

The Luk components were problematic. Unfortunately when someone went to a dealer for replacement parts they were most often given the bad Luk parts once again because the Type 'A' choice was listed first in the catalog.

ToyMoCo quietly dropped Luk altogether as a supplier then and subsequent OEM parts were Aisin only.

I wonder if it's a combo of both heat and high humidity. I'm no expert but I believe standard (stage 1) clutches have a large organic component in their friction material. I bet dry desert heat, like say Arizona, probably doesn't bother it anywhere near as much during long-term storage / aging.

Sounds like the slave cylinder was not working properly. Or the seal on the TOB failed.
