Well stated. This is a basic fact. It's also a cultural thing. I hate to say that, but when I was stationed in Japan my 1k mountain bike could be left in front of a mall with thousands of people walking by and they would only stop to admire it, but it would get stolen on base by amerikans. Same reason why the younger generations feel entitled and parents think a college education will make their kids successful automatically. Selfish, non respecting, self centered, ego centric, sit on someones expensive car to take a selfie, self righteous US.

This isn't an insult or directed to you per se, but that is a false sense of security. I also live outside city limits on fenced acreage in one of the most desirable areas in my city with the average home price in the seven figures. I have had one serious attempt at a home invasion at 10:30 in the morning a few years back (and several soft ones where a weapon wasn't drawn). I was in bed and my 110 lb German Shepherd went off and about drug me out of bed by my arm. I was pretty pissed off at him (flippen hurt) until I seen what was going on. I always sleep with one of my AR's out (usually the 15) and grabbed that and went to work.

My newly acquired dog (2 months/retired police corporal, but I have known him since a puppy) was going off, hitting the front door and was just so damn loud. You can see from my front door what's inside and that wasn't stopping these two pieces of shit. They couldn't hear me yelling over him. He will attack (and has on duty), so they had a plan for him to keep on attempting to enter my home. Most likely had a small caliber pistol with a bottle taped over the barrel (poor man silencer).

    IMG_9157.HEIC.jpg

Luckily before they broke that threshold one of them looked inside the front window to my kitchen and seen me set up on them with my AR just waiting for them. They stopped, backed down my long driveway (plates removed...very prepared) in a nicer truck than I have.

The whole purpose of this is always be prepared. Lastly, never go all Leeroy Jenkins out of your home because someone is on your property stealing. That is a legal battle you don't want...if you don't get clipped first. A lot of these thieves are organized and very prepared. For some reason people think all these crimes are committed by crack heads.

    For example:

Look at FBI statistics on theft and the W's (what/when/where). It might surprise you.

    What did I do?

-Vehicles are inside, not a big deal on that.
-More visible cameras with motion detection. I had more hidden cameras due to another unrelated issue. I don't do motion lights since most thefts are in daylight anyway and I'm not going to help someone at night steal my shit.
-Better gate security. Now have remote control gates with motion detection.

You can put up side plates on fuel tanks to make drilling a the tank more difficult. These guys are looking for easy access.

Tanks can be repaired pretty easily. When I worked at my friends diesel repair shop (did it for fun), we did this all the time especially when fuel hit 4.00+. No way in hell would I spend 1100.00 or more on a tank replacement (unless it was drilled on a round corner).

I lived there in 1992. I had a car window broken and the stereo ripped out, which I didn't replace the stereo. I started leaving the door unlocked, and one day found that the lock had been picked. I moved!

Gotta admit, I'd be tempted to do more than call the police. One of the things that occurs to me is going out front and putting a knife in their tires.

See right there is the problem. You can't just waive a magic wand and have nice stuff. You have to work for it. Big difference between now and then, a lot of people want everything right now and not have to put the time in and work hard to get it. Seems like you are the delusional one, and if you consider working for what you have entitlement then I guess I'm guilty.

Wrong again on the house but yes I do keep my truck in a garage with all of my other vehicles I own and have paid off.

This is a big reason why we have a problem, it's about time we enforce our right to protect our selves and our property. The LEO catches these scum bags, but it takes less time for them to be released than the ride to the precinct lol!

This also must be memorializing to our LEO staff

I think you are over-estimating the average tweaker, 'cause someone is getting a battery drilled, you know, for the electricity.

I can appreciate your perspective. I would admit I'm probably a little complacent to crime with how low-key it is where I am, but part of being prepared to me are risk-based assessments of your circumstance and surroundings. I'm more worried about hurricanes and tornadoes that I am with property crime. I get everyone will be different.

In your personal experience and the example you gave being in Japan, what reason(s) do you feel it is different there? Honest question based on curiosity, nothing more.

And yes re the last sentence. Or just not caring. I couldn't tell you how many times I've had to ask people (be they randos or those who know me well) to GTFO my damn truck. It's not a piece of furniture or a place to throw your trash, asshole.

That's assuming they have a car. I shit you not, we had a local business owner that was fed up with gas theft (costing him thousands every month) and he started sleeping in his garage waiting. He ended up catching one of them and shot him a couple times with a .45. If I remember right the man ended up living. His wife got on social media and said "it was just gas. My husband might die over a few gallons of gas he was selling to feed us." They didn't even own a vehicle.

Not a bad idea though, but again when you come outside your home...lots of unknowns unless you have a killer security system that covers the perimeter of the building. I wouldn't park my getaway vehicle right in front of the home I was stealing from.

I tried looking for the news article but sifting through so many shootings and theft police blogs is useless. Seems we have shootings/killing daily now. I remember this business owner being in a ton of legal problems due to the Castle Doctrine in Colorado not covering places of business unless in self defense. The business name is Discount Exhaust Works if you feel goggle fu is better than mine.

I did remember this one. The business owner was aquitted, but it sure cost him a lot of money. This place is in the ghetto and it would have been cheaper to sell and buy at a different location.

I don't know why things are so different specifically (and this is saying it in a generalized way...there are always those small cases). But, I can say that for the most part....asian countries just have a respect for things (that was my experience in korea, viet, japan, thailand). Like I went to an older couples home in japan and they had a stereo from 1970's and I asked why they don't get a new one and they said ..because this one still works. We on the other hand are a disposable society and want the latest and greatest regardless of need (and all newer generations I'm sure). When I was in Africa (somalia)...so many people had nothing of possession, but there was still so much jealousy and greed over scraps. It's no wonder these countries never rebuilt from colonization and otherwise. Japan, korea, and viet had friggin wars and look at their economies now! Just saying there is a national pride of sorts there. Again, this is me just taking a stab in the dark on what I saw and felt while living abroad.

I will note that a kid in DC who was killed recently for messing with someones car has been a big headline. The guy who shot him wasn't the owner of the car and is being charged. I understand the anger because I would be angry no matter. But your life has to be on the line to raise the level to lethality. But again....I don't fault the shooter because I can't stand those who don't respect someone elses property! Eff around!

I really do wish we had more...not sure how to say this and stay within the site rules...

Let's just say I wish the punishments were more direct. There are plenty of countries I have been in that one doesn't break the law. Not sure if you have ever seen a public caning..but it's fantastic.

Edited for @Conquistadors since it was too visual for him.

The problem isnt so much the gas itself, but rather the hole thats drilled in the tank.
