If you've got a lift and can wrench in the slightest I'd say you can do it yourself 100%. From what it seems its basically the same thing as a 2nd gen external-wise.

Never had to do one myself. I might be over simplifying, but it seems like you'd just need to drop the drive shafts, unplug electronics, remove the housing bolts, and drop it with a transmission-type lift.

If this is it, I would be more than happy to try it.

To remove the tcase basically you need to -

    unbolt both driveshafts
    disconnect electrical connectors
drop transmission crossmemeber (makes things so much easier)
remove 8 bolts holding tcase to trans
    seperate from trans

I've done it on my 2nd gen 3 times now (two more than I wanted to) for an FJ case swap.

If you go the used route, inspect the pictures closely to make sure there are no cracks in the breather line hose. Any water in the actuator will lead to issues down the road

Crazy to think a relatively low mile t-case grenaded while being used In a way it was intended.

I'd be crossing my fingers and toes everytime I turned the dial if I owned a 3rd gen.

To speak to the matter at hand, I'd buy a used t-case and swap it myself. You can do it on the ground if you had to.

Because one out of a million failed? Not sound like a fan boy, but make enough of anything at least one is going to break.

ok, because one in a million had an issue. I personally like those odds, but we get it…..you’re here on your crusade, you win, you have the best ever built. Feel better.

We don’t even know if it needs replaced, I’m skeptical, but don’t have it in my hands either.

X2! I stripped the drain plug on my t case and had to have it replaced. They found one from a wrecked 4 Runner online with 75k on it. It was a few hundred bucks for it but all in all it was only like $1200 total for everything! Much more affordable than a brand new one!
