Should I run AMS Dominator 10-w30 racing oil in my stock Tacoma?

That still works no matter what oil you run.

 

This highlander has been pretty amazing for fuel economy and the dash display is set to show average fuel economy. Its always between 24-26 year round (80% highway 20% city, garage kept), with 5W-30 it has been between 20.5 and 21.8 for the same use case.

 

Well then lets just filler-up with 40w70.

But seriously, going up to 5w20, especially in summer months shouldn't make a bit of difference, but I question the wisdom in extreme cold climates. Also, wondering if Toyota might use the non specified grade as a warranty disclaimer in engine failure claims.

 

I didn’t say go to 40W-70. I said the VVT works no matter what you run.

And doubtful. The owner's manual says a higher viscosity might be a good choice if at high load or high speed. I don't know how anyone can logically argue that higher viscosity will hurt anything when the beloved owner's manual says that note.

 

That's my thought too, my father puts diesel oil in his 4runners, I cannot for the life of me understand it. He is all knowing though, so....

 

There is absolutely no telling what caused that engine to blow. He had a supercharger that he conveniently didn't mention. 10W-30 didn't blow up anything. And 30W-10 is not a thing.

 

I ran amsoil series 2000 2 stroke snowmobile oil which is dominator now when I raced 660' ice drags with my 2000 600 ves Polaris sled. No complaints. I won't run their amsoil interceptor oil in my trail sled as its crap.

 

i would think so. i live in hawaii and we can't get to that on toyota.com. does not recognize my vin, we are in a different place when it comes to that. so i keep old school written logs.

Just having a little fun. As to warranty, as long as it's spec in the manual it's fine. Wonder out of that, blow an engine (doubtful) and get ready for a lot of back and forth.

Worth noting that that is in the paragraph discussing the “20,” which is separate from the paragraph discussing the “0W.”

So yes, if you are going to haul a 5000 lb trailer across Texas in the summer at 75 mph, then 0W-30 might be a good choice.

But even Texas gets cold sometimes, and that’s where the 0W (W= “winter” by the way…) is what you want to protect your cold engine until it warms up.

 

Adding a bit of diesel, about 8oz to a tank, used to be a way of cleaning out the fuel system. That was back before the mass air flow sensors and ECU's. STP gas treatment on the cheap. Don't do it now a days on anything with an ECU.

I would not put diesel fuel in anything that new, myself, but hey if it's working. We are talking about a cup full to a tank of gas for all Ya folks that don't read a couple of post back.

Ah, ok, we are taking two different things. Some old timers, in my day, use to run a little diesel fuel through their fuel systems a couple times a year. Something about diesel being a detergent? Anyways, lol, that is what I thought you were saying.
