Me n my dad occasionally trade trucks, he drives a 2021 GMC 1500 Duramax, and I drive a 2021 Tacoma TRD OR- here’s my thoughts.

    • the GM slaps the shit out of the Tacoma on the highway.
    • That 3.0 Duramax really is a beast for towing.
    • 35mpg on the highway is also really nice
    • interior Of the gm really isn’t much better than the Tacoma, with the obvious exception of being bigger.
    • The Tacoma has been more reliable. The air pump on the duramax went out at 50k miles, and threw it into limp mode. Spend 3 weeks in the shop. No issues with the Tacoma.
    • I have way more fun driving the Tacoma. The GM feels like a tool- it is amazing and precise at what it does, however it is bland.
    • Even though the gm is superior in every single measurable way, I still love my Tacoma and would take it over the GM in a heartbeat.

Traded my 2012 Silverado which I bought new, for a new Tacoma in December. I don't off-road other than mountain service roads with snow, so a little off topic from the OP about lifting and what oem mods are available I pull a small boat, live near the ocean. The engine was reliable and no problems. Serious rust issues underneath, front end did not hold up very well, and the wheel wells were disappearing rapidly with rust. Ironic, rust was a Taco problem right? Now I find full size pickups if all manufacturers cost too much to justify for my needs, but I do miss the V8. Time will tell for me, but after having GM trucks for decades I made the jump, part of the reason is we traded a Tahoe for a 4 Runner in 2018 and that has been great but I would have considered the Canyon or Colorado if they had manual.

Yeah. Diesels are king when it comes to milage. I’ve had it around 40 before. My dad averages 33.2mpg over the course of his commute. It is the one thing I wish Toyota did, offer a small diesel in a Tacoma.

My dad had one of those. I can remember being told to fetch wrenches while he was working on it. To be fair it was really an ISUZU, I think.

No offense taken and I mean no offense, this is a great discussion. Yes I would like some luxury features in my work/play truck like you have. I would like the trail boss in a regular cab truck and I'm willing to pay for that option. But I can't have the option of having my cake and eating it too like you can. If they made trucks like they did in the 70s and 80s the families would still have to buy a station wagon or dare I say minivan, which were/are very versatile vehicles that have great features to haul around your family and materials if needed. Now that wasn't good enough, because like you say, people want everything perfect for them. It's great that they make crew cabs as an option for the people that need that type of truck, but not everyone needs or wants a crew cab truck. If it works for you that's great, if it doesn't work for me I'm whining and should just shut up and just buy a crew cab, same as those families that should should just have bought a station wagon or minivan. I don't see the problem with having an option for an upgraded single cab truck, except the manufacturers build what sells and that is crew cabs. Once families move on to the next great versatile platform, I doubt that the crew cab pickup will continue to be the only available luxury optioned format.

I've had 2 Subaru's, still have the 2nd (2010). If Subaru made an "off-road" capable truck, I'd trade the Toyota in a second. And, I REALLY like my Tacoma.:crapstorm:

My last Dodge was a 2007 1500 std cab, 6' bed. I bought it because i used to 4-wheel a lot for hunting and fishing and I hated the CC's for this...too big. The one I bought had a LOT of really good off road options (tranny cooler, HD radiator, limited slip diff, 3.96 gears, and some skid plates). But, I couldn't get leather seats or any other upgraded trim package. I went for the practical over the pretty. I know why they do this but, I don't like it either.

I'll give Chevy one compliment. OEM Front locker!

Unfortunately, everything after that falls short of a Taco.

Ya, they've been trying to knockoff the Taco from the top spot forever.... Same results year after year...

Gonna say if I had to buy a truck tomorrow to try and win a Baja next week, it would be the ZR2. Not saying I was gonna own it ten years, don't get your panties in a bunch.

Hahah you must work for a Toyota dealer. Check out these numbers, that's why my Toyota is the bestest. Thats like saying f150s are amazing because they sell a crap ton of work trucks to companies.

Numbers don't lie, and that was in response to someone claiming Chevy/GMC was breathing down Toyota's neck. Which was obviously bullshit.

F150 fleet sales have always been the bread and butter, nothing wrong with that. And I'd rather own an F150 than anything Chevy makes.

Work truck could mean different things to different people. My "work" truck was my home for 6 to 8 hours out of the day. I took customers out to eat in it, I might need to load 2,000 lbs of welding rod in it, or an SA250 Lincoln in the back to drop off to our service techs. So being a work truck encompasses many aspects. A little luxury goes a long way when you are looking at 3,500 miles a month

I have a pristine, collector plated 1991 Tercel (laugh all you want, insurance is dirt cheap on it, and it's fun to drive) The wiper stalks are the same as my 09 tacoma (better optioned on the Tercel), when my reverse lights crapped out on the tercel, the part number is exactly the same as the one I replaced on the Tacoma. I'm sure there are other things the same as well. My 1979 Ford Fairmont had the same dome light as my 04 Ranger.

While I get your point; I however believe it shows that the entire market prefers the Toyota over the other midsize offerings. I have to believe the numbers on the GM product include work trucks as well. In my area, I don’t see Tacomas (or Tundras) used as work trucks for utilities and large businesses; that’s filled by GM and Ford products for the vast majority, like 90-95%.
