4 Cyl 2020 traler hitch?

My 2020 Tacoma 4 cyl (bought used last July) came w/o a trailer hitch but I want to see about installing one. My question to those with more experience than me, can a 4 cyl handle towing a motorcycle trailer with the bike say 1k lbs? Should I pursue it? Pro's vs. Con's?

Can you back up a trailer ?? those short ones come around so fast.

If you have an automatic no Towing in Over Drive

If towing often a added transmission Cooler might be a thought.

 

Your vehicle's rated tow rate is well published and available info. 3500lbs. I tow my 16.5ft fishing boat and trailer which is closer to 2200lbs with my access cab 2TR-FE no issues. Hills suck tho.

1000lbs trailer/bike is nbd.

You may want to install auto trans fluid cooler if you're towing in a lot of hills.

 

Your truck didn't come with a hitch because it doesn't have a tow package (more stuff than a hitch), but that doesn't mean it can't be used to safely tow the correct amount.

Your owners manual will be a good guide here.

 

a lightweight open trailer should be GTG.
Now, you get an enclosed with all kinds of aero drag, and/or a moderately heavy trailer with two axels- it will probably start to suck fast.

 

Check the owner's manual (available on Toyota's website if you didn't get a hardcopy) for your model's towing capacity. I seem to remember it's 3500 lbs.

The mfr's tow rating per SAE J2807 standard is performance-based, i.e. max the truck can tow and still able to merge safely on highways and maintain speed up steep mountain roads.

 

Heads up tho it will be very difficult to get the oem 7/4pin connector next to the rear license plate installed on ur 4cyl but it's not impossible either.

I'm doing it myself in the coming weeks. I may post a step by step.

 

Curiously, I don’t see the tow package listed as an option for either a 4cyl or 6cyl in the current builder on toyota.com.

When I bought my 2016 the dealer sales rep told me that although the tow package is an option I would find it hard to find one without it. Maybe it is an official standard feature now.

 

I have a 2017 access cab w the 2.7 and mt. Mine had no hitch either and I was able to get a hitch, trailer light harness (powered by connection to the battery and has t connectors to plug the harness into your lighting) and the seven pin/flat connector from etrailer. It took about 3 hours to install everything and it looks stock. I tow semi regular a zt mower and atv that probably is just under 2 k pounds. Installed it two years and 75 k miles ago and have had no problems. To be a small truck it’s very stable towing as long as you don’t overload it.

It’s printed right on the bumper where the ball goes, look at it from underneath. 87% positive of that.

 

As of late 2021 there's no longer atf cooler in the v6 tow package in any trim
