So I have 2 vehicles running 3rz. One is at 300k and the other just past 250k. Both run and drive. The 300k had a stack of codes, horrible idle and bad throttle response. I replaced a couple of sensors and did a few little things now it runs great. The other 250k had recorded maintenance history and runs very well, lately its got an odd miss during idle. It doesn't do it all the time and doesn't do it during the warm up cycle. I plan on cleaning the throttle and iac valve etc. To see if that helps. They both need valve clearance checked and if one craps out I'd need a reasonably priced engine. Stupid evap codes prevail on both

That's a good idea to check those and maybe pull and clean them. But no I don't run cleaners or anything. Running stuff like that and oil addives thru the engine make me nervous as a bag of bugs. I think that's what killed my o2 sensors was stuff like seafoam the previous owner ran. I'll Def pull and clean those glad you brought that up. Have you had a similar off kinda detonation maybe you would call it? It's like a pff at odd intervals

I would never run seafoam thru an automotive engine.......all kinds of bad stories their.....

same as with a total transmission flush......alot of those go bad too.....

Also you know an old stuck injector can stick open and hydro lock and ruin an engine in the blink of an eye.....
considering new denso ones are about $55 a piece....that would be a shame.....

    toyotas are good....but not magic.......

their hoses and stuff wear out just like anything else....

Yeah, I've dug and dug for a vacuum leak, the injectors I've let slide bc the several times I've listened with a stethoscope they were clicking as well as any working ones I've listened to before. That's doesn't mean one isn't leaking or flooding...

The manual I've got also said in troubleshooting that the egr could be working poorly to cause this

I know absolutely nothing but having the exact same issue with my 4runner, and over on the forerunner forum a lot of people said it's the PCV valve. It was like 10 bucks online so I bought it just because.

I replaced that as well. It's a 97 4runner that I'm talking about too in this case. Thus truck I got in south Georgia for cheap and it's a dandy 4x4. Like a time capsule. It sat for about 3 years In a garage, that makes me think it's a fuel delivery issue. Also, it runs perfectly fine on the warmup cycle. I cleaned the maf about a week ago, it was VERY dirty, I pulled the efi fuse to reset it. Truck ran like brand new but after a couple of hrs runtime the issue came up again, 1/10th as bad as it was but still there. Also I noticed that diaphragm on the throttle, the bit that juts out at the throttle arm thingy from the diaphragm with the little adjustable screw, yeah..it don't touch the throttle arm thing like on my perfect idling 3rz tacoma. Maybe that has something to do with this. How many miles on yours?

Bro it's gotta be something simple. I'll go down my list and check off another item or 2 this weekend. When I solve this one I will share what it is. I've got too many wins on these things thru all the hardships between my 3yotas that I know It can be solved.

Ok so I have a p0325. The knock sensor is adjusting timing for some reason. The wire harness to the knock sensor has a severely crimped bend in in to the connector. When I wind up second gear it retards power for a moment then runs normally with full power the rest of the drive experience. Wonder if the sensor itself is bad.

I got a used 3rz off of ebay for about $800. They said it had 160,000 miles. After tearing it down, it looked like the oil had never been changed on it. I did a full rebuild on it. The machine shop I used charged about $1200. I did the rest of the rebuild myself. All in all, it turned out really nice.

They all say 160k lol. The problem In my area is no one knows how to do anything. Doesn't matter what it is. Every thing is a hack job. Can't find a professional to even look at a 90s toyota and have any clue as to what they're looking at. I guess that's just the way it is now.

So I put in a new PCV valve in 4runner, figured it couldn't hurt, in about 4 mi later got a check engine light. I haven't ran the code yet but I'm pissed off.

I know the feeling. I spent a bunch of money getting rid of a handful of codes and had no check engine light for weeks only to be completely stumped by an evap code. Maybe you bumped something loose like a vacuum line or wire putting on the pcv.

I would be tempted to get or make a smoke machine......and check all you hoses for leaks....
these trucks are pretty simple.....fuel flow.....spark.....and most bad sensors will throw a code....
    that leaves vacuum leaks.....and grounds.....

back in the day I made one out of an old soldering iron and a sun tea jar.......

Sometimes the actual hose off the pcv could be clogged too. Also egr problems can cause idle issue. Just recently got p0325. Knock sensor was broken. I epoxied that thing back together and reinstall...didn't work lol. Need fsm pages of 3rz with dual coil packs 1997 for p0325 if anyone can.
