Isnt the trick to give it the onion every time you drive it to keep things from building up?

Yep, that'll be it so the DPF can burn out whatever is in there.

At the moment it's still at my MIL house but I'll go check it out tomorrow. She wants to put it in my name right away but I'll need to make sure it can pass smog for that to happen. She's got the title and official copy of death certificate at the ready.

With the exception of the Duramax I had (trade-in) I've never owned or maintained a diesel so I'll be asking on here.

Speaking as someone who dropped out of multiple art schools, save your money unless you're interested in doing something insanely specific/technical or teaching.

My old boss had one about that age. Manual swapped with an nv4500, it was pretty sweet.

Ouch ya smog sucks. Can she gift it to you so you don't have to pay sales tax?
Glad I won't be the only one. I'm too embarrassed to ask about the Powerstroke lol congrats on the new truck though.

We had one when I was a kid. It was great. Load up and drive on the beach with everyone packed in comfortably plus all the gear. Good old trucks.

As cool as more power would be it does just fine getting up to speed and cruising at 65mph. I just want it reliable.

@Speedytech7 do you know how much it'd be to rebuild or at least refresh a 1FZ-FE, compared to say, a 5VZ or 3RZ?

My 97 had so-so compression in the 120s and 130s, and it seemed down on power (I needed to grab 2nd and mash the throttle at 4k rpms to maintain speed up most hills). The bearings seemed good from the oil analysis, but how much would it be for new rings, seals, and gaskets?

It feels like it could allegedly hit triple digits easier than before and that across the rev range it gained more power. Sounds strong and healthy and is smooth as butter. Glad it was relatively easy and cheap fix. New plugs, injectors, coils and filters for $800 isn't a bad deal and should last me some time.
