Car makers have learned that having 500 new cars on the dealer lot is bad for business. "You have all these cars sitting here, why can't you cut me a deal?". I think dealers with slightly smaller selections will be the new norm giving the impression of slightly constrained supply will allow for higher transaction prices. In Canada, most dealers have very few cars and when you buy one they bring it from some sort of local storage yard that I'm guessing all dealers share. For course, Canada has fewer big cities with little sprawl so maybe logistically it's better. Somebody from the great north set me straight on that one.

I'm an urban truck user so I'm OK with paying more for untruck-like things - self driving, full glass roof, cooled seats, real wood or metal trim, soft padded dash... If there was a "prime" plug-in hybrid version with a larger battery that allowed for 20-30 miles of all-electric range - I'd pay $10k for that alone. Toyota, are you listening?

If you dig further, truck sales remained up for Toyota in the quarter. Like I said and other member ahead of me, people are still buying in demand trucks and suvs, sales slumps seem to be in crossovers / car segments but yes inflation, interest rates, supply constraints, etc. are affecting sales overall. But you are in dreamland if you think pricing will decrease with the upcoming gen or that you will be able to get one at a discount or discounted to the price of a current 3rd gen.

I think Toyota was the last hold out, but I’m pretty sure the next generation of trucks will seriously downplay cheaper models/work trucks and target the luxury family truck market.

Toyota was always really proud that you could order a poverty pack model of their SUVs and trucks, which is something they are quietly phasing out. They’re not even offering a short cab 3rd gen like they did with the second generation.

I had a poverty pack 80 series and 200 series, Toyota doesn’t even sell a Land Cruiser in the US anymore.

Yes, I’m aware that they do sell the 300 series Lexus, which is essentially a rebadged Land Cruiser, but that makes my point even more.

Meanwhile, the average F150 can go up to $65,000 and people are fighting over a $140,000 Raptor R on Internet auctions.

 

Exactly, saw this when TRD packages became similarly priced to SR5 packaged trucks, and honestly its what most consumers demand these days, vehicles are now status symbols, personas loaded with creature comforts and people will pay to have the latest. $50k TRD Sports and Offroad Tacos I'm guesing will be the new norm with this upcoming gen.

 

The flip side of having a lot with few cars, is consumers that will not even stop at the lot to look, because there are very few things to look at. I am one of those consumers, empty lot, I drive on by, even if I was going to order something. But since Toyota doesn't really order vehicles, I really don't stop to look at a toyota dealer that has nothing on the lot.

The manufacturer is partially to blame for having so many different variations available that it’s impossible to keep all of them in stock.

But there’s also the issue that since there is nothing at the dealer. You can’t just go in and test drive different variants of the same model, compare different suspension and interior set ups, actually get to see some of the fancy color variations you’re paying a huge premium for in different types of light.

You’re just supposed to order a vehicle online and then give it a quick 10 minute look over when it comes in to decide whether or not you want to buy it or lose your place in line.

If I’m going to have to order a vehicle site unseen and given how crappy dealer warranty service is, why even bother having the dealership model anymore? Just let me save $5000 and order the truck directly from Toyota.

Prices certainly will not be coming down with the 4th gen. Inflation is still very high at 6.X% and the automakers will protect themselves from that. They also cannot currently keep up with demand.

The reason Toyota truck sales are trending so high is because that's what they've been focused on building (Tacoma & 4Runner, specifically). I don't blame them either, tooling is paid for and they are less tech laden (chip shortage) than the other offerings.

The best we can hope for is a small MSRP increase on the gen4 models that use the 2.7L and 3.5L carryover engines. My wild guess is that the new engines will be in models with a higher MSRP (and larger $ increase gen3 to gen4) and then, after a year or two, Toyota will quietly drop the old engines, move the new engines into lower trims, and bump the base MSRP a bit more. At that point, the 2.4T and 3.4TT would be the only engine options, tooling would be further paid for, cost reductions would have been implemented, and they have protected their nut from inflation.

 

You’re predicting 5 engine options? Highly dubious.

 

Never said it wasnt just more so than ever with social media, it used to be keeping up with the jones and mid life crisis vette dude, etc. Now people build whole images and personas off of what they drive or the image of what they may do in or with their vehicle.

And I'm not predicting them, that's what that insider guy on here said. I'm just going by what he said and predicting how and why they will phase them out.

 

There is also the 2.4TH and a straight up 2.5H. So we are up to 6.

Toyota has always had 2 engine options for the most part in their trucks. The tundra set the stage for the next gen trucks with a turbo and turbo hybrid. Putting a 30 year old 2.7 4 banger in a next gen vehicle would be asinine at this point.

But we are all just speculating at this point. We will have to wait and see.

 

You are forgetting the diesel option. My sources tell me it’s coming.

 

Right. And the full electric. So that makes 8 drivetrains. And when they add plug in power to the 2.4TH we have 9.

 

There is no way in hell there will ever be a diesel Toyota truck in the US.
