For the love of your wallet and Taco, DO NOT DO IT.

A rubberized coating WILL absolutely, positively, undeniably, inevitably TRAP dirty salty water between the coating and your frame. It does not matter how 'perfect' the installation is. Water is an insidious fluid and it WILL find the tiniest pinole. And there will be many. PRESTO - you have an ACTIVE corrosion environment.

    Other helpful suggestions:

    * Use a product called FLUID FILM or WOOLWAX instead. Both are great and you can't go wrong with either one.

    * If you want to do something positive that actually makes a difference to deaden road sound, apply a good layer of Fat Mat sound deadening foam on both front doors. There is virtually nothing there. This is a super easy DIY job if/when you upgrade your front door speakers.

Do you apply the FF with a sprayer or the aerosol cans? If a sprayer, can you recommend one? Was thinking of getting one at Harbor Freight.

simple answer is both. use cans for smaller areas, like hood perimeter, bottom of tailgate, bottom of doors etc. use the pro gun, to get the big areas, frame, floor, bedsides, under hood, suspension, etc... I bought this gun with 1 gallon of Fluid Film as my "starter pack". it was less than 150 shipped to me. now I can coat everything I have, with just buying a refill of Fluid film, wool Wax, or Surface Shield. I do it with a sprayer, just got a cheapo one off of eBay. Can't believe I'm saying this but I'd bet anything at harbor freight is likely better quality.

Toyota rubber undercoats the wheel wells and those aren’t exploding left and right with rust.

Cosmoline RP-342 is basically the same stuff. I think it's even tougher. It's been about 3 years since I applied it on my tacoma. Except for some tiny areas around the rear leafs where water spray on wet roads has been the most abrasive, its all still there.

Dealer sprayed mine with something they called rustproofing, I wish they wouldn't have but it is what it is. I don't drive it in the winter right now and won't for several years, but when it gets exposed to salt I'll fluid film the shit out of it every fall like I do my S10.

FWIW, our work fleet of about 55 Chevy express vans, always had the rubberized undercoating applied for 20+ years now. Not one rust complaint, ever. These vans get abused and the undercarriage never gets rinsed.

I also signed up for the dealership undercoating with the associated 7 year warranty (Without really understanding undercoating just knowing it had to be done living in New York). I called they said they use a product called Empire Undercoat. Does anybody know anything more / would recommend for or against?

They should be able to tell you what type of product it is otherwise run away. If it's a wax based/cosmoline go for it. If it's oil based go for it just understand that requires yearly application. Call around most often you can get it done paying less to the same company the dealers use.

I'm also in NL, St. John's to be exact. I had a 2006 Tundra and just sold it for a 2017 Tacoma. The main thing that kept my Tundra from rusting (IMO at least) was the annual Krown application.

I used Krown on my Tundra every spring, like clockwork and she had very little to - no critical rust damage for being almost a 20 year old truck. Krown also hauls moisture out of the metal preventing further rusting. As for the "10 year" dealership undercoats, I'd say they're fine for what they are but you can also get Krown on top of that as well. They will get spots the dealership cannot get + iirc someone claimed Krown can penetrate through other products? (Don't know how true that it)There is never enough undercoat here in NL lol!

I know this post is almost a year old, but it's never to late OR a bad time to get your truck Krown'd. Us NL's have to look out for each other haha! I go to Auto Trim on Topsail rd in Mt. Pearl, the boys are great.

EDIT: Missed the part where you decided to not do the dealership undercoat. Good call. All the best
