Hunting Rifle Help

Over Christmas I decided to go and get myself a hunting rifle. This will be my first gun and my first time to do any real hunting. I did some research and figured I would do the Rem 700 ADL in .270 but when I went to the store to look at it they had just clearanced them out for $133, since they have stopped manufacturing them. So now I have started the search all over again. I have it settled between two guns and figured I would get some TW insight on this. I am only wanting to spend $400 max on gun and optics. I will eventually get a better scope, but I will probably wait for summer and my birthday.

First it the Savage 111FCXP3 in .270 for $399.

So I guess in the end is the pro-fire trigger and short action worth more than the detachable magazine. Thanks for any insight.

 

so why did you decide against the rem? I would go for that, that way you can spend more on a scope and rings.

Cheap optics on bigger caliber guns are worthless. the recoil will keep constantly make them go out of being sighted in. I had a cheap scope on a .308 and it knocked the zoom out to where I was stuck in 3x power.

 

shit for $133 Id buy two of them. keep one and sell the other one in like a month once they run out for like $300

 

The savage will be a good way to go. The optics on it are good for the price. A good friend of mine bought one just to throw in the truck and not worry about it, and turned out to be a really good gun. Savage has came a long way in the last few years.
I am a full Remington guy though.

 

Check out Weatherby Vanguard. The black/black ones are $399. Excellent guns.

I've heard the Stevens are decent for a bargain basement gun. They are made by Savage. You get the Savage accuracy but they don't have the nice accutrigger.

you could buy a used one. a Win Model 70 or Rem 700 cant be beat. They are proven reliable designs that are very accurate. just check the barrel and action to see that it was taken care of

 

A new remington 700 in .270 for $133 is a no brainer. snatch it up while you can. You'll have twice the gun at half the price. Where is this deal? I'll buy one myself!

 

I was trying to jump on the Rem 700 bandwagon, but they sold out and they are making no more of them. The next cheapest one is about $500.

 

You may want to check out cdnninvestments.com they are in abilene tx. You can download their catalog. They buy clearance lots of guns so sometimes u can find winchesters ticks howls religions etc at good prices. You ideally want something that will last a lifetime....so consider that in your purchase...BTW 270 is very versatile and good place to start.

 

i would go with the marlin 270. i love mine

 

weatherby 30-06 is the best thing you can buy. you can hunt anything in the states with that round and even go to africa if you wanted too and shoot some of the smaller animals over there.

 

Definitely go with the Marlin! Just too bad the Rem isn't an option any more

 

I'm starting to lean towards the Marlin. Excellent reviews online, and that pro-fire trigger seems to push it way over the edge.

 

What are you hunting?

 

Deer and hog mainly, but other smallish pests as well. Nothing larger than a deer though.

that Marlin 270 will do everything you need it to, in my opinion you are starting out with a great choice. .270 was my first rifle and years later is still what I prefer for almost any occasion

 

Nice was just curious as to why you were starting out at a bigger rifle for your first gun. Definitely sounds fun though. I haven't had the opportunity to go for bigger game yet, just varmint and quail so far. Good luck man

 

I wouldn't say the 270 is that big. I have shot plenty of guns before, it has just never been mine. I have also been hunting, but never shot anything since I don't have a gun and see no point in getting a licence with out one. But also I don't wanna buy this then have to go get something new 2 years from now.
