It's hard to watch them getting so old...

    Great memories, though.

And, this spring, I plan to build a couple Adirondack chairs! ;)

Hi all. I just refinished a breadbox my late Dad made. I finished the last wipe on poly (Minwax) coat on 05Feb. How long until the poly smell goes away?
I want to use it, but don’t want my bread smelling like stain and polyurethane!
    Thanks for the help.

it's mostly going to come down to the level of adjustments, and ease of getting replacement parts. a more mainstream brand ought to have better replacement availability.

i just use one of the cheapest one's the local hardware store had. brand isn't worth mentioning, it was re-branded a few times already.

Keep it warm, place it near a heater vent if you can. The warmer you keep it the faster it will cure. The problem with poly is it cures from the outside in, so the underlying layers take longer to cure.

Thanks! I brought it inside, from the garage. The odor isn’t super strong, but when you get really close to it, you can smell it. Granted, it’s only been a few days since the last coat of poly. I’ll give it a week or two more and go from there.
This was the first time I used wipe on poly (instead of aerosol spray I’ve used before); and I gotta say I like it a lot more. It seems like it’s a better finish with the wipe on vs spray.

I used Danish Oil (wipe-on, half poly, half oil) to refinish several rifle stocks. I gave it a week to dry between coats.

Be patient - it will be worth it!

I'll give that a try on my next project, a jewelry box with several drawers for my wife. I'm planning on using cherry or walnut; not sure yet. I've made some out of purpleheart and padauk, and they have a unique look to them.

After a couple of coats (and a week each of drying time), I used 0000 steel wool to smooth the surface, and applied Johnson Paste wax. Nice finish, not too slick, not too shiny, and repairable.

You might want to practice, and try different techniques on scrap (non-project) wood, to see what finish you like best for your project.

My wife's family has one just like that. I believe 3 or 4 generations have slept in it, including my own son. Very nice.

    Edit: 7 kids total.

Walnut is one of my favorites too, love the smell of it when you work it. And the way it pops when you apply a finish to it.

100% love the smell of walnut. When I finish sanding and take the respirator off…

    Woodworking heaven smells like that.
