Toyota has not issued a TSB, campaign, recall, or stop-sale for all 3rd-Gen Tacomas with the V6 for "timing cover leaks".

Yea but you can't say the 2023's won't have the same issue. They have had this issue continually since 2016. all years.

It's not a safety concern so there is no one forcing Toyota to fix it. Legally Toyota doesn't have to do anything about it. It's just a shit design they don't want to bother fixing because a new crop of motors are coming out.

What they should do is offer 100k mile protection if the cover starts to leak and cover it under warranty. But Toyota isn't the company it once was.

It probably will be about as reliable as the 3.5.. which is to say not exactly bulletproof

TSBs are only issued (typically) when there's a company-endorsed solution to a common problem/complaint.
Recalls are only for issues involving the NHTSA, typically safety-related.
Campaigns are only for issues not involving the NHTSA, kinda-sorta a recall but not really. Think of it more as a voluntary repair program, versus the recall being a mandated repair program.
Stop-sales are for critical safety/emissions issues, usually recall related.

The random, minor oil leak from a timing cover? It isn't any of those. If they had a concrete solution for that oil leak, they might issue a TSB. But, even Toyota doesn't seem to know why a fraction of the 2GR engines have the issue. Resealing a timing cover, while a costly repair, is not worthy of a TSB as resolution is no different from following the R&R procedure in the FSM.

    seriously!
I shopped for a 2nd Gen before buying mine..but the prices being asked were seriously like 5k difference…and brand new with warranty, or something with 100xxx miles with unknown maintenance? I went brand new lol

Is there a way to clean the area that is leaking, and then smear an epoxy like JB Weld over it. To seal it from the outside? I understand it's a seep and not a leak per say...

If the 2.7 fits your needs don’t think twice about it. You know you’ll go the distance with it unlike the 3.5.

True though you still wanna try to search historically where it's been. My friend went the other way, bought one in MA here and then moved to NC. Her frame rotted within the time allotted and the NC dealers had no idea what she was talking about until she showed them the bulletin and the vehicle history.

    OP, where you from?

Probably will it’s just transportation to and from work and I drive around 30,000 miles a year. Don’t need to tow anything with it other than a lawn mower or side by side less than 50 miles if I do tow.

The 2.7 sounds perfect for you. I love my truck but if I didn’t have kids I think I would have went with the access cab, with a 2.7. I drive about 25k a year and know it would last a long time. My trucks awesome and the 3.5 doesn’t bother me with its “lack of power” but the 2.7 is bomb proof.

I probably will just get an access cab 2.7 , my 2004 I currently own is a 2.7 which the deer I hit did some damage but it is repairable. My 2011 I bought new was a 2.7 and so was my 1996. I’d like to have a little more power but the 2.7 just keeps going mile after mile. Before the year is over I’ll have another tacoma and just use my ‘04 as a work truck when I’m close to home , firewood , hunting/fishing rig and something to drive when the roads are salted here.

OP, I just read this thread and the same old tired fucks are still shitting on the 3rd gen.
Go drive one. 95% of over a million sold love theirs. The five percent show up in this thread. I had a 2017 mt thad did fine with the 3.5 I have a 2021 that does fine with the 3.5. drive it and don't let these bastards bring you down. Drive both and see.

All this bashing on the 3.5 makes me laugh . There is absolutely nothing wrong with this engine. There are people on here with over 200 k miles . Change your oil every 5 k don’t beat the hell out of it and treat the rest of the truck right and it will treat you right . It’s got plenty of power. It’s a truck not a Corvette, and a very good one at that . It’s also much quieter inside than the older gens . At the end of the day when it’s time to sell it you will get great money for it compared to any other truck.
So what is everyone complaining about ? I really don’t know . Trans maybe can be a little wonky ? So what if it really bothers you get a tune . For me it’s fine . If you feel like you afraid of the timing chain cover buy an extended warranty ( If you do buy the warranty after ) you can get a great deal. The reality is even if the timing cover does seep( usually not a heavy leak ) lots of people leave it and and just clean it once in a while or they fix it . But it’s not the end of the world AT all
    End of rant

My 2010 single cab 2wd has served me well, I have almost all of the 131K on it myself. Engine is just fine for what I need it to do, I'm not hauling a trailer or trying to race people. 20-23mpg city from a truck ain't so bad.

You cannot kill a 2.7. Only known issue is a leaky plastic coolant bypass pipe near the manifold, but the oem replacement pipe is made from stainless.
