Like said, Toyota offers help on the rusty frames up to 10 years. You've still got time!

Toyota will do something to help you...probably treat the entire frame with some type of rust preventative.

Not sure if they are still actually replacing frames, but this one seems solid enough it probably wouldn't qualify for full replacement anyway.

Effective rust treatment and prevention using the "always fluid" products requires re-application annually. Brands you can use are Fluid-Film, Wool-Wax, NH Oil Black, and others.

Several inaccuracies above. On a positive note, Toyota will help folks who help themselves. Contact your local dealer (if you buy it) and inquire as to what is available for that particular vehicle. Tacoma frames are covered for 12 years after the first "in-service" date. As for what corrosion protection they will apply, it is limited to the inside of the box section areas at the front of the frame only. I'd highly recommend getting somebody else - after Toyota - to coat the rest of the underside. My personal favorite - and I live in the rust belt - is a product called Waxoyl.

Well that's pretty cheesy of Toyota, to not do the entire frame while they are at it.

I own two Tundras, so have no direct knowledge, but a good friend has his Tacoma frame done at the local Toyota dealer, and they coated the entire thing. Probably as a goodwill I would imagine. (Not sure how good the job was done...)

Even so, like you said, a specialty shop can do a complete and thorough job on the frame for a few hundred $$. (Or DIY for material costs + time...)

That frame looks OK for now and over the internet. And it looks better than mine did when I got my truck.

As others have noted (and you will find on TW) there are plenty who thought their frame was fine, until it wasn’t. Then they are stuck/missed the window and have to decide if they will spend $15K, kluge a fix, or punt it to some unsuspecting buyer.

Toyota put a new frame on my 2006 in 2018 due to rust perforation. Mine was an Iowa truck. Only 12 years of service to a frame fail. Why take that chance?

Personally, if you have $29K to spend on a truck I’d buy a rust free / nearly rust free truck by going further west and driving it home. Everything bolted to moderately rusty truck is a PITA to service.

    Happy hunting.

Thanks for all the advice. Really appreciate it. I’m still on the fence because I agree that the price seems steep, but the truck is setup the way I like it and the color is my favorite color for the 2nd gen Tacomas. I really wish she would have just applied some undercoating from day 1 but unfortunately she didn’t. She’s also pretty firm on the price. I’ve attached some pics of the whole truck here.

Keep looking. Check out online search engines like Autotrader. You may have to travel some but you can at least see what your options are.

If you do decide to get more serious about this truck then I'd recommend first speaking with Toyota to confirm what coverage is offered for its frame. Assuming it's been a MO truck its whole life, from what I understand it would not be covered under the K0D Limited Service Campaign to receive the CRC frame coating, since MO is not considered a cold climate state. However, it appears like it would be covered (12 years from date of first use) under the ZKA Customer Support Program for frame replacement due to frame corrosion perforation. Below are some links for your reference, but again, verify with Toyota.

All of this. But bullet number one..do nothing until you call Toyota, provide the VIN, and ask where it stands re the frame in general for this age and if there are any deadlines the prior owner missed for it.

I know a few with the 2G (prior to 12-15 run) that bought them and the owner had missed the first inspection deadline so they were SOL.

Don't gamble. You must make sure that you are on the right side of that before you go any further.
