35s with a 4 cylinder

I want to do a 6" lift with 33s. I didn't think of doing 35s because people say you have to re gear and I don't think a 4 cylinder is strong enough for 35s. I Don't care about being a super fast truck but I don't want to be super slow. I have seen other guys out there saying they didn't re gear and run 35s on a 4 banger. What do you guys think is the right move?

 

You can get by without a regear for 33s but if you wheel or load it up you're going to want to regear... I did 33s with my 2.7 and eventually I am going to atleast 4.56

 

I'm only running 265/70R17 tires and think regearing wouldn't be a bad idea. I'm piecing together a lift now and thinking of going up to 33s when I need new tires, so regearing would be a really good idea.

I too have the 2.7 motor and auto trans. With 33's, I am running 5.29 gears front & rear. Truck works well.
When I ran 32's, I had 4.88's and it too worked well. As a DD, I will not go up to 35's simply due to the lack of power and available gear ratios available.

Manual trans or auto makes a big difference with your tire selection with the 2.7 motor.
Which trans do you have?

 

Little different since I'm a first gen.

My truck had factory 3.17 or 3.43 gears in. Was a little slow with 31's. Went to 33's and hated my life, starting on an uphill really sucked. Then I went 4.56 gears and it was money.

Now I went to 37's and 5.29's. Yes I've lost some top end speed above 80mph, but I have a truck that can go nearly anywhere I point. Around town it drives as good as I can expect lol.

But I would recommend staying at the 3" lift height for your truck. 6" means you are running a drop bracket lift and those are kinda

You're gonna want to regear if you go 35s. You could go 286-75r17 which is a 34" and a little narrower than most 35s. You'll likely still want to regear but will be hating life a little bit less.

 

Old thread, but I strongly second this as a 2017 AC 2.7 owner. I have 265 75 16 KOs right now on stock gearing and it struggles on the freeway in 5th holding gear up even a slight incline. Yes, 5spd manual with 3.92 final drive.

I couldn’t imagine going 35s without 5.29, and at that point it’s not that great of a DD anymore and geared like most rigs meant for the trails. 4.88 would be fine for 33s with enough power, but turning those 35s with 4.88 would probably put me right back where I am now and possibly even more sluggish.

IMO, for a DD + weekend rig (if you wheel), stick to 33s for a 2.7. That’s why I’ve been debating trading it in for the 6mt V6 regeared with 4.88 so I can comfortably run 35s. The worst thing you can do for your transmission and driveline is undergear when going with larger/heavier tires.

I’m not well off enough (yet lol) to have a nice DD and a nice weekend toy aha.

 

2014 manual 315s on 1 inch lift . Runs fine with stock gears easily 70 mph on highway . 4.88 gonna make the drive much easier.

 

I don’t mean to resurrect but can you give some more feedback/driving impressions Danglee? I also have a 5 speed regular cab and I’m aiming to replace worn out stock suspension and 265s with some 5100s and either 315 or 285/75r16 but don’t know if 35s will be too much. Saw a 3rd gen with 285s today and they looked kinda small but don’t want to tank fuel economy and performance

 

Gonna need regear for sure with them 315s . 1-4 gear is good 5th on flat highway is fine , but little incline 5th gear is gone . Hope this helps…
