I've heard of dealerships that will do half day/24 hour test drives. There's a small possibility it might've been offered out as a loaner for a day or two, too, while someone had their car in service.

Sorry about your issues OP, I hope you get it fixed. I’ve mentioned this before, and even made someone upset by saying it, these newer trucks are delicate.

With all those little tiny wires and sensors all over the place on them it is somewhat risky to take them to remote places by yourself without the proper provisions, especially in weather where it would be dangerous to your health to walk out unprepared for it.

Thanks for the replies all. Appreciate the different perspectives even if it is just that I’m getting “f’d in the a” haha

Just to clarify a couple points - car had about 10km / 6miles when I first got into it, so not a lot. And yes, this is west coast Canada

I do think I have to wait for the dealer / Toyota and get back to me about what the problem is. I think there’s a chance it could still be something easy to fix, but I do wonder at what point you kinda tell them that they haven’t provided you with what you paid for. It’s been in the shop a week today. The loaner is a Kia Kona so not sure how much off-roading I want to do in it…

That’s just not at all good especially after a week and no info.

I’d be inclined to press them trade it for another one, maybe pay the difference for a higher trim level.

Imo, it's better the problem happened as soon as it did. That's what warranties are for. My experience with Japanese owned products is if there will be an issue, it usually happens right away...it's fixed and you'll never have another problem. Hopefully they will know what the issue is, and how to take care of it.

You'd be surprised. Had a 2014 Civic and they couldn't even look up a TSB where the gas cap seal was faulty in many Civics of that year + other vehicles and had me back and fourth numerous times saying "they couldn't replicate the issue". When I started working towards my automotive certification they taught us the first thing you should do is look up recalls and TSBs...

But it won't cause the serious driveability issue like @Bigfoot Cedar described:
"About 20 minutes into the drive on the highway the engine starts stuttering and the throttle is no longer producing acceleration."

A loose gas cap will typically trigger a small evap leak code that is distinct from the other 60 codes that could throw a check engine light.

    Check build thread!
Incorrect. Certain vehicles arrive with too little fuel for a test drive, so we had to drive them to the gas station down the road (which was 4 miles each way for us) and some vehicles were selected at random for quality assurance tests, which puts about 10 miles on the vehicle. The number that Toyota corporate actually considered acceptable was anything under 75km. This truck was 100% in guidelines and nothing was done wrong, unless of course it was sold with an issue known, but I doubt that.

Hopefully just a bad fuel pump or something. Hopefully not a critical issue.
