Has anyone been able to swap the "next song" button with "higher volume"?

that's fair. To your defense (not that you asked for any) it does take rigorous training of both muscle groups; bitches majorous and complainer minorous, to be able to navigate TW 3rd gen out in the yard.

 

How else would they get around?!

 

I heard the Toyota study that decided to arrange the buttons this way had concluded most folks also fly airplanes so pulling back to go "forward" was the logical thing to do.

I've tried my hardest to figure out if they fixed the dumb layout on the 4th generation Tacomas based off the latest spy shots but I can't read any of the buttons.

Intercept R48-21 (SW1) at the back of the head unit (based on 2021 with Nav pinout), feed the switch pod output to an A/D input of the cheapest microcontroller dev board you can find, and the output to a D/A via PWM. In software, you remap the input voltage ranges to different output voltage ranges. It's minimally invasive, cheap, and easy to implement.

I was at first annoyed but quickly adapt and can't be bothered to change it. If enough people are excited about this idea I could mock something up on the bench and share the details.

Note that I don't have a full wiring diagram so I'm making plenty of assumptions.

 

I'm definitely interested. If you can pull this off you'd have at least 100 people willing to send you money for some sort of in-line adapter mod.

No promises but this has me curious now and that usually leads to tinkering and often followed by solutions.

 

I've done some probing and measuring, and just about have a working proof of concept using stuff I had laying around (that's overkill for the job). I'll test it on the truck soon.

The bigger question if I'm going to be making a kit available is about form and installation method. There's always the question of whether people will actually follow through with a purchase after expressing interest.

So, I see this going a few discrete directions. Let me know what you'd actually purchase:

1. Nothing, you capitalist bastard! Publish the details and schematics with exhaustive descriptions, videos and pictures and I'll do it myself for at least three times the cost and time.

2a. I know my limits, but I'm comfortable doing some cutting and splicing of the factory harness behind the head unit to insert a small electronic device in the circuit.

2b. I already have a harness adapter and I can splice into this without messing with the factory wiring.

3. 100% plug and play. Insert the adapter into the circuit by snapping together connectors.

 

Well, for starters, I'm sure some would like an updated button set.

 

Option 3 would be ideal, or option 2a would be a maybe. Option 3 would of course require connectors that fit specific models/years of the head units... there may ba differences. In my case I already have Germes RFCC camera controller installed. So your device would need to be compatible.
