Was rolling at about 10 mph and shifted it into reverse to back up into the driveway. Big mistake. Hard thud and the whole truck jumped back. Now everytime i shift into reverse i get a loud thud and i can feel the truck lurch back. The truck still goes foward and reverse. Dont be like me lol. Didnt think it would mess up though. I was rolling slow with my foot on the brakes.

Update: ending being a blown fuse under the dash. Truck works fine now.

update 2: my guess on what happened… My guess is because that the lamp reverse fuse was broken the computer relied on that to help see that it was in reverse. Guessing it didnt know what gear it was in at all, so it was maybe in reverse physically (shifter)then thinking it was (computer) in drive making it go crazy. Just a guess though. Trying to engage reverse and drive at the same time. Hence maybe the squealing i got on the tires. I could be completely wrong though. I think an aftermarket trailer harness i added mustve shortened it out. (They are connected to the reverse lights)

I guess the rough shift into reverse could’ve happened anywhere after the fuse probably blew during my drive and was not due to the maneuver i did.

Issue was with “backup lamp no 3”

My ex wife did this in her Camaro. It broke the transmission mount.

I guess free-wheeling down hills in "N" isn't a good idea? (If you miss the "N" and go from Drive to Reverse). I thought the new vehicles wouldn't allow this....

Well boys, transmission is toast. 106,000 miles. Just drove it around the neighborhood. Shifts foward okay. Put it into reverse, gave it some gas and thing started lurching like crazy with tires squealing. Time to buy a new transmission

It is what it is i guess. Im just surprised that it couldn’t handle that reverse i did, it wasnt even going fast at all. Makes me almost think the transmission was already on its way out.

It may not be fast, but you’re asking a couple of gears that aren’t designed for it to stop thousands of pounds.

would you want to stop your truck by standing in front of it?

    Damn that really sucks.

Did you shift into R intentionally while going 10mph?

Who told you it needs a transmission? Have you looked at the mounts like suggested above? Are the u-joints OK?

I had a 88 toyota Cressida in HS, I was cruising about 40-45 mph on a backroad and accidentally bumped it into reverse, the rear tires immediately peeled out, looked down shifted it back into D and it was fine for years after that

Mounts are okay. When shifted into reverse and gaven gas it shakes like wild and tires start locking up

Any check engine light or codes? These days if a auto trans shits the bed it will set some kind of code(s).

Is the case cracked, anything leaking?

Look at the leaf springs, U-bolts and shackles, make sure something downstream of the transmission isn't loose

Check transmission linkage. Perhaps when it changed direction abruptly the linkage may have gotten tweaked. Im sure if you look you will be able to tell where it was , and where it sits currently.

I recommend you get a professional opinion before diving into this project.....for all you know it might be something in the differential or T-case.
