Yeah front beam flipped has bags now. Rear has flipped bus reduction boxes. Shocks…not sure yet. Haven’t gotten that far. Haha

Yeah huge project. The roof is chopped 8”, the body is chopped 4” then I slapped the 4” piece from the body to the bottom so it’ll be completely on the floor when air out.

Starting to do the body work now using lead. No bondo here.

I raced offroad for 16 years a lifetime ago. The air-cooled VWs were amazing bits of engineering...and could take a helluva beating.

 

I believe on Australia, you can get your modified vehicle certified by a shop with an engineer on staff. On some of the Ozzie YouTube vids you see then doing this after a cab-mount-chop and whatnot.

It’s maybe a service that will be offered in North America if state/province inspectors start cracking down on mods. Car culture and modding vehicles is such a huge industry in North America, that I would be surprised if it ever went this way, but it would be good to at least have the option to get certified when faced with taking your vehicle off the road.

I have a mildly modified truck, but when I think about it, I took off my pedestrian-friendly plastic front bumper and replaced it with a steel number guaranteed to cut jaywalkers in half. I kinda hope things never get over-regulated where I live.

 

This appears to be how they are rejecting it. You might argue it's not a, "patch, weld or repair".



Maybe getting it reclassified as a Type-2 street rod will allow it to pass.

Lead, or lead free metallic filler? I'm going to try my hand at the lead free stuff when it comes time to re-seam my '40. I'd love to chop the top 4", but my balls aren't big enough neither is my savings account.
As for shocks, if you want something interesting, build some custom friction shocks.

Yeah chopping sucks. I had to get a second roof and expand it using parts from the original. Not fun.

I tried both real lead and the lead free. Real lead is sooooo much easier to work with. Melts so easy. Lead free works pretty well too just not as easy to work with.

The WHOLE TRUCK is designed for 31's. It is not designed for hard off-road. You know what is? Buggies. Buggies are designed for hard off-road. Our trucks are designed for pavement and dirt roads.
Get this.... There is currently zero vehicles that are designed to work well on the pavement and work well on heavy off-road. Zero! Know why? Because it is impossible. It's like painting a car red and expecting it to look blue.
The stock truck will do the best it can ever do off-road and on pavement. As soon as you make one mod, either way, it weakens the performance the other way.
So, hack away if you choose. If I want to go hard off-road I will buy a buggy someone else built for pennies on the dollar vs what he spent.
