Maybe my mindset is different, I wouldn’t care if it meant damaging my $40k+ vehicle.

1: 10mph is not "slow" when changing direction.
2: Regardless of how busy your street is, you need to come to a stop anyway to change direction...it's just physics. Use the brakes.
3: Doing what you did could in no way have damaged that sensor.

Allow me to be the first to say, it's not going to turn out to be just the sensor..

Yeah, I've been thinking the same thing. He'll know soon but the description of what it was doing and the bad noises sure sounds like some internal gearbox damage has occurred.

Hoping for a good outcome for the OP, but I don't know!

With the sensor removed, you might check the shift shaft sticking out of the case and make sure is moves through all positions when the shifter is moved. It's possible it may be broken inside the valve body. That could explain the trouble code

damn...I thought the transmission wouldn't let you put it in reverse if moving forward...might be speed limited to over 30 but figured it was any forward speed.

Good luck finding a rebuild kit, when I hit a deer and lost the cooler my transmission burnt out...these things REALLY don't like running dry...well what transmission does lol. Found ONE company claiming to make a rebuild kit but they said it wasn't ready for release for another year and a half, so like mid this year. you might find one now, even toyota dealerships didn't have just the clutchpacks and other internals.

I had to just call around junk yards, called every one in central and east texas and east to central louisiana...finally found ONE company that had a wrecked 3rd gen 4x4 v6 tacoma, my truck had 44k and the transmission they found had only 10k. I think it cost like 3k, 800 for a mechanic to install it for me.

I thought I bookmarked them, I'll find the paperwork and post up the company, they had to ship it to my location too

the transmission won't let you shift into reverse while driving forward. it has a safety-lockout. you could shift into reverse at 50 mph and it would be fine.

You can throw it in R at highway speed and all that happens is rear cam comes on. Not sure why it wouldn't have the same protection at 10mph. Maybe that limit is higher?

Sounds like it grenaded the Sun gear and or the Planetary gears . Very common when going from drive to reverse at speed to quickly

Damaged internal components for sure. You might luck out with the range switch so I wouldnt give up all hope on that. Chances are it is internal.

If you put the truck in reverse while driving at around 35 mph the truck goes into neutral instead of reverse a safety feature. Guess not 10
