Rope handle (robe cord?). As a little kid I remember hanging on to these flying down bumpy dirt roads.

That rope was a blanket holder. Poor heat in the back seat of those old cars.

‘48, though some cars had these well into the ‘50s.

So I’ve read, an old Buick manual identifies it as a “robe rail cord” and some cars had them as late as ‘57 and heaters were better then. Never saw a blanket on one so not so sure it wasn’t for hanging “robes” or coats etc.

Update: Found this. “Robe” apparently a term used for a special blanket in days of old. I suspect the robe rail was used more often for coats in the ‘50s.

My favorite place to ride was on the ledge at the back window.

If I needed a car seat back then I would have never been taken any place or tossed in the trunk and told to be quiet.
