Tow limit - is this too much for a short haul?

So my understanding is the tow limit of the taco is 7k lb (3182 kg). How REAL is that?

I have 4 cows I need to get to the processor. Their weight should be about 5400lbs. I am trying to borrow a trailer but weight is unknown.

Haul distance is 170miles. Fairly flat. Mostly interstate.

animals will be packed and not running around. Should be balanced over the axle. (If 1 axle). May be dual axle trailer - both exist.

    Manual truck.

Is this an ok haul? I can have another person haul for me, but is quite a bit of $. Even compared to my missing a day of day job and doing it.

    Thanks!

Just don’t stop on any hills with the manual or you’ll need 4 low to get going again

Air up the tires to the max on the tire side wall, and go for it. As you know go easy. Earlier in the morning the better. Good luck.

Is it ideal? Not at all. Will it work for a once time thing? Absolutely, as long as the trailer has functioning brakes.

never seen a hitch mount on a rental truck. I have looked for friends who needed to pull an airplane.

I don't want to break my truck to save $300. But the $300 will go a long way towards dealing with 1500lbs grass fed burger!

Are the trailer's brakes electric? If so you're gonna need to install a brake controller. 5400 lbs on a single axle sounds really excessive and you don't want to "balance" the weight over the axle. Without sufficient tongue weight it's gonna wag like crazy. I say either do multiple trips or rent/borrow a heavier duty truck.

Towing capacity is 6400-6500 lb depending on configuration. Also watch the combined weight doesn't go over the GCVWR. The rating is based on acceptable acceleration performance from the powertrain (so the truck can merge onto highways safely). I would avoid the interstate if going over the GCVWR.

I've towed about 6500lbs total (vehicle on trailer and it did fine. You will sag the ass end but if it's over +10*C fill your tank with premium and you'll be good to go... this tow with sell you on getting a tune

I don't know about that. I was towing 5-6k lb. loads and ended up bending my stock leaf springs. Upgraded suspension and no more problems, at the moment. Taco stock leafs seem to be a known weak point. Other than that, and maybe stopping, you should be ok. If you will be doing it a good bit then I'd invest in a brake controller. If you have a towing package, they are pretty much plug and play.

I don't know brother, this one feels just a bit over the edge. If you decide to go for it, please be careful!

My leaves were still flat as the day I got the truck but that tow did sell me on an upgrade for my rear suspension with Road Master active suspension following that tow from Canmore to Fort Mac. When my springs are actually defective I do plan to upgrade them since I often haul/tow. But if you aren't ready to shell out the clams for news leaves already the roadmasters are my pick hands down over airbags

Your tow limit is actually 6800 lbs, and hopefully you have trailer brakes and you can get the right cow in the right place to not overload the payload on the truck, you may want to double check your tongue weight and weight distribution.

A lot of these at limit tows I have seen are with flat bed trailers, the stock trailer is gonna be a little bit of a sail so be prepared for that.

I wouldn’t try this. I’ve hauled cattle before and it can be a challenge even with a full size depending on your trailer configuration. You’re going to be over your towing limit but that’s not a load you can strap down. The weight is going to be constantly shifting as they move around and that can cause real problems especially in a truck that small. Do yourself a favor and just make two trips or find some way to use a full size truck.

I agree, I think two trips would be a lot easier and safer.
