WD hitch and brake controller. Done. 3rd gen section has become increasingly "odd"

The OP said the cattle weight about 5400 lbs, a small dual axle stock trailer averages about 2900 lbs empty... So about 8300 lbs with no mention of trailer brakes controller or any kind of weight distribution hitch for a 170 mile expressway tow.

I am not sure I would say that was odd to recommend that it might not be a good idea.

I think people looked at the 5400 lbs and forgot about the trailer, it would be highly unlikely that you would find a single axle stock trailer that has the axle capacity to haul 5400 lbs that is under 1400 lbs.

I guess anyone that tows an 8300lb travel trailer without trailer brakes or any weight distribution could give the OP a rundown.

@TacoSupremo19 before I consider your advice can you please verify you come from one of the NJ farming counties below. I'm not saying you are a popped collar Hoboken-ite, but you are posting some things on this thread that make me question your towing street credibility. "WD hitch and brake controller. Done." <- Said no one I know ever who tows

Gloucester is my home but my actual "towing" experience is from Cumberland. I would never suggest towing these kinds of weight without these two items.

Lol, good thread. I'd definitely rent a truck before tearing up my own as others have mentioned.

I wouldn't do it. Any trailer capable of holding 5400 lbs of livestock is going to be 2000-2500 lbs empty. That's 7500-8000 lbs. Very few 1/2 tons will handle that. You are in 3/4 ton territory.

PULLING 8000 lbs isn't the issue. I've PULLED 10,000+ with my Tacoma and 30,000 with a 1/2 ton. But only for short distances and with no weight on the hitch. I pulled a F250 plus a livestock trailer with cattle in the trailer with my Tacoma and a White Freightliner plus an empty 45' trailer with a 1/2 ton.

It is when you start putting weight on the hitch that a Tacoma comes up short. They have very limited payload and in the real world around 4500-5000 lbs is a more realistic limit.

If you just needed to move a hay wagon around on a farm or take the cattle 5 miles or so on the road I might think about it. But not for 170 miles.

3rd Gen section has always been odd. It is the same shit, over and over, and yet we still keep coming back. Lol! Not sure why it is odd giving out some friendly advice so it keeps someone from damaging equipment, livestock or endanger someone else’s life.

At the very least if you’re gonna do sketchy shit, get it on video!

Your truck actually has a 6400 lbs towing capacity. I also own a V6 manual Tacoma.

Anyways, +1 on I wouldn't do it. The trailer you're gonna use would probably push it to over the towing capacity.

I've done a bit more than 5k lbs towing my sports car, with some added weight on the bed. I had done that safely, but I can feel the weight.

I won't weigh into trying to answer the 'is it possible' because I've never pulled livestock or anything heavy enough to push the capacity of my Gen2 or Gen3. If you are asking for my opinion, all I will add is that you should consider the weight of the trailer and the load as an all up total. If that exceeds your towing capacity you already have your answer. Could you exceed that? I have no idea. None of this is going to be of any use if you get pulled over or have an accident and they add up the total weight of your load and it's greater than what your vehicle is rated for.

I'm surprised nobody has asked about the tires on the tow vehicle, maybe someone has and I missed it. Would you want/need some heavier duty tires on the truck before attempting to haul such a heavy load behind the vehicle? Again - I haven't towed anything of this size before so this is more for my own knowledge than anything else.

Backing that trailer will be a PITA, but that is the least of your worries. That's a lot of weight. See if the cows can pull the Tacoma and trailer instead?

I just love it how guys hook up and tow and say these Tacomas cant tow. When you hook a trailer behind any pickup to its max rated capacity, you will definitely notice its back there
