I’m curious on this too. I was set that I need a 1000 pioneer 6600 to be happy. But this may fit the bill for my factory look.

So I got it installed today. Very simple install. All of 30 minutes.

It works, it’s wireless CarPlay and android auto. The only downfall is that our screen resolution is so low, like 670x420 or something atrocious like that. That being said, you can really tell the resolution is poor while using CarPlay but for me it’s definitely doable.
There is probably enough slack in the cable for the CarPlay device to route it towards the glove box but I pulled the XM unit out as I don’t use that anymore at all.

Nice! Can you show how it looks in Google maps and Spotify if you have it? That's all I'll use and want an idea of what the resolution looks like. Is it noticeably worse than the stock nav?

Looks decent enough to me for $200. Do you notice any oddities with anything? You're still able to access the regular radio items like vehicle settings and everything else? How do you switch between the Carplay interface and the original entune items?

@Technique did you have to hook up these 3 connectors numbers 7,8 and 9 when you installed. Reason I ask is I’ve already installed an anytime front and backup camera and don’t know why the Apple unit needs an rca connection. 78B39127-CD46-4F92-8851-A7E57BD6303C.jpg

I did not hook those up. I think that's for if you want to add an additional camera that can be accessed by the unit at any time as on the menu, there is a camera button you can press.

Yes, you can still access entune at any time. You just press and hold the voice button on the steering wheel to switch between them. I have noticed so far it doesn't seem like the Bluetooth is automatically connecting...so I have manually been doing it. Maybe I am just impatient...

Yes, it's definitely noticeably worse than stock. It's hard for me to read the street roads on the maps because it's so small and almost blurry. To be honest, I will probably be sending it back. I thought the resolution thing would be fine, but its annoying me and if it isn't connecting automatically all the time, thats a deal breaker also. My friend also got this unit and installed it but he's not having the connection issue so I don't know.

Good info. Thank you for taking the plunge on this. When you say BT fails to connect, is the phone still connecting to the truck's built in BT and it's just not connecting to the Carplay module? Does this module override the trucks BT? On my wife's car when she plugs her phone in for Carplay, the BT connection to the car is lost. I'm wondering if you received a call with them both connected if there would be a conflict.

I removed my truck from my phone, but the CarPlay does take over when they are both connected. Calls do get routed through CarPlay and work fine with both connections. My friend and I actually tried all that when we installed the units, seeing if the quality was better through one or the other (seem the same).

Come to think of it, my truck I think keeps trying to connect to my phone as I don't think I removed my phone on the truck side (entune), maybe that's why the carplay unit isn't connecting as it should. I'll have to check that out when I head home for lunch later.

I have a 2019 OR, came with the entune 2.0 that you guys posted above. I got lucky and found an Entune 3.0 headunit from a totaled '22 OR, online from a part yard in California. Ran me 600$. I then got the entune 2.0 to 3.0 conversion harness from autoharnesshouse for $200. Everything was plug and play, about 5 min install, no modification needed. Steering wheel controls and all still work, only thing you lose is the built in nav system, but doesn't matter with CarPlay. It connects through the USB port below the climate controls.

How did you find the headunit? What site did you use to comb through junk yards?

I did the upgrade to the 3.0. I would NEVER spend $2400. I got a Sienna 3.0 unit without the Carplay update which I found for $300. I then updated it myself. If you want AA you'll need a 2020+ Tacoma unit or from another vehicle. Find the part #s and search them to get the right one. The www.carparts.com or similar site would be the cheapest. This can be a challenge though if your looking outside of a Tacoma with or without GPS.

Do you know if that USB connection a way to do wired CarPlay?

I know you dislike the resolution and maybe it looks better in still photos, but if you didn’t have the connectivity issues would it still be a pass?

I’m happy enough with Entune 2.0 (an oddity, I know) but have a piggyback for $200 isn’t a terrible option. I have XM through my BIL so I’d need to figure out a way to do it without losing the antenna.

Yeah, you can use the provided usb cable to do it wired. My connection issue is fixed now that I removed my phone from my trucks Bluetooth. I had previously removed the truck from my phones Bluetooth but not on the trucks side so the truck kept sending pairing request to the phone and that was messing up the CarPlay connection. Kinda confusing to word that but yeah. I think I’ll keep it…

You do have to go into CarPlay mode every time which is kinda annoying. You set the entune to AUX and leave it there, then you gotta press the voice button on your steering wheel switch over to the CarPlay device. I haven’t found a way or know if it’s even possible to have it do it automatically. Music will start automatically playing, just to see the CarPlay screen you gotta do that.
