Pics would be cool as they're likely the wheel I'll go with but in particular I was curious about that 8.5" and offset with any potential rubbing issues.

I'm due for some new tires on my 2020 OR and I'd like to maybe get a set of 255/85/r16 but wanted to know how badly and possibly where they would rub with a full load of gear on a stock suspension with all the weight of my goodies.

I currently have on my truck a front skid, a set of sliders, a steel rear bumper and a canopy. With all my camping gear I'm slightly over my gvwr.

Rubbing is all about rims (wheels). Do you have stock or aftermarket? If after market, what is the offset?

Great that you have stock wheels.

I'm running 255/85R16 on stock wheels, stock suspension, w/ all the same armor you listed --- except for the steel bumper & canopy. I have factory bumpers & a Softopper.
I did mount a front trailer hitch (25 lbs?) to use with a winch (can be front or rear pull now). Said winch is extra weight (70 lbs) in the bed. Along with recovery gear, shovel, axe, & hi-lift, and 2 jerry cans (5 gl fuel, 5 gl water). Two full tool boxes in rear cab floor. Once I throw in camping gear...

I don't rub. Comes close on pax side in reverse, but it clears.

How do you like the front receiver? When you off-road do you leave the winch mounted on the front or keep it in the bed?

I was worried that the front receiver would really spoil the approach angle. But it isn't all that bad. I've seen some custom build ones that are better, but mine works for now.
Big Anderson plug coming out of the front grill. Then a long extension to reach back when winch is installed in rear receiver hitch.

I leave it secured in the bed until it's needed.

After many months of lurking on this thread, I ordered skinnies- 255/85/16 Cooper STT Maxx. Should have new tires installed and alignment completed this week. Can't wait!

After spending countless hours researching this topic, I've decided that 255/85/16 is the ideal size for a stock third gen TRD OR Tacoma. I have a couple questions.

Are we absolutely certain that the Cooper ST Maxx is the best/only available A/T tire in this size? The only others I have seen are the Toyo M55's. Due to the price of the ST Maxx ($332/each), it's tempting to go with the some mud tires. Wildpeaks, for example, would save me a few hundred bucks, and also look more aggressive. This truck is my daily, and I feel like the decline in ride quality would not be worth it for the amount of off-roading I do.

Has anyone had any issues with shops refusing to mount 255/85/16 on a stock Tacoma? I plan to use the stock OR wheels (currently on the truck), and so I need a shop to lift the truck, unmount the wheels, and then re-mount/balance/add sensors to the new wheel/tire combo. It's technically not within Toyota specs, and I'm wondering if I'll have issues getting this done at a Discount Tire or Les Schwab?

    Thanks

    Both are mud terrains.

It's my understanding that the ST Maxx falls somewhere between all terrain, and mud terrain. I'm okay with noise and loss of gas mileage, but going to full muds feels a bit much for a daily driver.

Compounding this issue is the fact that the options for mud terrain in 255/85/16 are far more numerous than the options for all terrain. Some very quality mud options are nearly $100 less per tire compared to the ST Maxx. It seems to me that Cooper knows they have a bit of a monopoly on this sweet spot, and price these tires accordingly. Walmart and Tirerack have identical pricing for ST Maxx in 255/85/16 ($332.99).

Duratracs and K02'S iirc also come in these sizes and the only place I can think of that won't mount em without a lift is Costco (at least here in Canada)

Thanks, that makes me feel a little better. I was considering getting a Costco membership if they'd be able to do me a solid, but you're the second person who's told me that Costco is a no-go.

I believe they're both only available in 235/85/16. I would prefer both of these in 255/85/16 over the Cooper ST Maxx tbh. The BFGoodrich KM3 comes in 255/85/16, but it's another true mud tire. Even the KM3 is a few bucks cheaper per tire than the ST Maxx. It's really a tough choice.

How bad is the road noise and loss of MPG for those of you commuting on 255/85/16 mud tires? Part of me wants to do it, but the ST Maxx feels like a safer (albeit more expensive) bet.

Looks like the wildpeak AT3W are AT tires per tire rack? They are cheap and great!
