Ive done alot of research online. Guess it could be anything from the transmission itself, wiring, sensors, computers, fuses. Ill never figure it out. Just gonna pay to get it diagnosed

Research online is great but.... did you get under the car to check. physically touch the wiring connection.

Yes, but there is wiring everywhere. Some of it not to easy to access. Im at a loss. Drove it to work on the highway shifted perfectly fine. Drove like normal. Check engine light is still on the dash though.

I’d buy a low mileage trans from car part.com and swap it out myself. Screw it

Are the dash indicators out because you removed the shift indicator you are replacing?

id go to a reputable tranny shop (no, not that kind) and have them assess it. Toyota will just want to replace the full transmission.

so all you have is a code? does reverse work properly? if reverse works, i would just clear the code and see if it comes back.

I don't know if you are 2WD or 4WD, but there are only a few connections. All on the sides.

The only stuff on top are brackets and breathers. 4WD would have one extra harness back to the T case.

    upload_2023-2-15_9-42-52.jpg

I am hoping for the best here, but I can't see this being an external electrical issue other than that shifter switch given the cause of the situation. The symptoms seem mechanical to me?

I just swapped a bearing on my trans. It was a day job, but nothing extremely difficult. The special tools would be a trans jack, 18in to 24in impact extension, some impact socket joints, 14mm, 17mm, and 19mm impact sockets, (both standard and deep), impact driver, and torque wrench. The only difficult part was the two bolts at the top of the trans.

Also, did the shifter switch not work? I might have missed that post.

Reverse works. Drive works. S mode doesnt work i cant manually choose the gears anymore . It shifts rough from P to R and N to D. The whole PRNDS does not work on the screen dash anymore. 1st trans guy said that the transmission and computer arent talking to each other, hence why that feature doesnt work. Said you can put it in Drive but the computer doesn’t register that its in Drive.

chances are you pulled a few wires in the harness and fixing it on the truck isnt a option.

This happened to a buddy of mine at a reputable shop. He took his in, they quoted 1500 something for repair. He said no thanks. They came back with "Ok, but it will be 800 for diagnosis." He said nope, present the signature where that diagnostic charge was authorized. They couldn't, of course they couldn't, because he knew that no paperwork was filed at dropoff. Then they called back again and said that their tech had repaired the transmission during diagnostic (saves time, they only have to crack into it once, was their story) and could they please work out a payment. Buddy said nope, show me the signature where THAT was authorized. A week goes by, and finally he gets a call saying "fine. take your car. No charge."

His transmission worked flawlessly after that.

the only stories i hear of transmission shops were from my old college professor who said the shop he worked at (as a boy) would take junkyard transmissions power wash and spray them with silver paint then sell them as new installs to customers

Was the indicator in the center display still working before you tried that switch swap?

Of course the truck isn’t going to display or know what gear it’s in with that removed. Also probably why you dash lights are on

i would try clearing the code first. might be in some sort of fail-safe mode. you sure you installed the sensor correctly?

I seem to recall the control modules won't allow shifting between forward and reverse at speeds likely to cause damage. Not saying there isn't damage, but it's not supposed to be a catastrophic event.

I'm leaning toward finding and fixing what seems an electrical problem first. Your description almost sounds like it's in a limp mode with forward only. When you try reverse it's actually in both at the same time and locks up the output shaft.

Ah! It sucks that the switch didn't help that.

I can now see how it could be electrical, mechanical, or both.
