I try to remember to write this ever time I grease the door but I always forget. Every 3-4 months I take a can of white Lithium Grease and put a little dab on each hinge point.
After working it back and forth a dozen times it closes like butter.

How to tell if the gas door needs lubricated? Open it fully,
Try to easily flick it closed with one finger. It should fully close and latch with one easy flick.
If it doesn't, it needs lubricated.

    There.

Good reminder ^^^ I almost had to buy a new fuel door last week due to corrosion, thought the hinge was shot. Dealer was going to charge $65 for the door and $10 for the rivets, plus I would’ve had to paint it to match, probably another $25 if DIY. Thankfully, I was able to resurrect the original door with some lube …good to go now.

You won't have to if you can easily flick it closed....

I've honestly never noticed the difficulty of any of my doors or hatches. Probably because Im in the habit mule kicking my gas door shut. It really is the best way to close a gas door.

One of these days, Charisse, the third shift cashier at the Diamond Shamrock, is going to notice my kicks. I can be as much a protector as your bulletproof lexan cubicle, Charisse. You'll see.

Same. I even blast the inside real quick with the pressure washer when I wash it.

I do it because my last Tacoma door almost bit the dust until I babied it with wd40 and eventually got it moving freely. This time? One minute every several months to keep it problem free.

Have you guys not seen the multitude of posts on these things?

All I will say is for all the people poo pooing this, it only takes once to mess up your door. And then every time you look in the drivers mirror, it will remind you that you thought it was no big deal.

Trust me, it is easier to just spray it once in a while and move on with your life.

Top and bottom of each section, or just the top and let it work its way down?

A dab on top and bottom. White Lithium does not run much. It is made to stay in place in outdoor environment for awhile.

    Yes, it does.
I have to keep on it, otherwise I get black mold near the garage. It's a northern exposure and doesn't get any sun there.

I get it and I do it too. But probably just once or twice a year for me and it don't take much.

Yes. 9/10 Toyota techs don’t want you to know that’s the original and best fuel system cleaner.

No. I open the fuel door and spray the inside of the door, hinge area and plastic area below the fuel cap.

Okay, I just sprayed it with white lithium spray; absolutely no change in how it feels or closes. The clip on the door does not overcome the friction on the plastic pin with "one easy flick".
IIRC, this maintenance idea came about as a solution for mangled doors hinges, right? I think some people are just extraordinarily clumsy & careless with the door. :notsure:
