I just did. Are you now trying to engage in discussion about the article itself? Are you using it to support a viewpoint that YOU have? Have YOU put forward any argument or discussion points that this enables or supports? Again, I'm speaking of YOU engaging in discussion.

You do realize that the article you linked to is not a research paper right? From their webpage:

The Scholars’ Repository, a service of the University Library, is a collection of scholarly and creative works of University of New Hampshire faculty, staff, and students. The items included here have been selected by the library or deposited by academic departments, research institutes, and individual contributors.

    This isn't even peer reviewed.

It brings some interesting points that may be worth considering, but it itself is one persons viewpoint. This is a single item, that should be considered, but is only one pieces of what should be thousands of documents, viewpoints, etc that make up a discussion.

So sure, its a point that can be part of an argument, but being that it is a single author with no peer review and is NOT a publication you REALLY need to check sourcing, evaluate the points made, etc. This is halfway between Fox news and BBC so extreme caution must be taken.

I wonder if the resources needed for EVs will be treated like oil, corporations trying to squeeze as much profit out it. And by then, will it be too late?

Oh, I know it is an opinion piece. Ahhh yes peer review, when one’s opinion is different from the group’s, they are deemed a heretic. A headline recently popped up in my news feed about peer reviews. See if I can find the link.

    Here it is: https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-023-00403-8

It also works to ensure that a research paper isn't just opinion
That conclusions are supported by data
    That sources are accurate
    That sources are valid
The the idea is presented clearly and in unambiguous manner
    That arguments are valid

But sure, we can use a strawman to claim the process isn't perfect, so ignore the whole process and lets go to YouTube and Facebook instead... Which is exactly how the Flat Earth Society works.

In one sentence you justified not having to listen to anything you don't want to listen to and completely rationalized using whatever source you want that supports your viewpoint.

That article basically outlines the difficulty in getting articles / research peer reviewed and not that peer reviewed research is unreliable in some fashion

All I said something popped up on my news feed about peer reviews, (you talking about it reminded me) haven’t had a chance to read it, was running out the door to work, when posted. Was going to try to get to it today, too fricken busy.

How is asking about if the continuation of extracting resources is really a good thing for the planet being a strawman? Now accusing me of YouTube and Facebook conspiracies. Good grief! The internet never fails… lol! Ask a couple concerning questions about the future of the planet and spirals into a shit show.

What happens to old gas and diesel powered cars now? Same thing will continue to happen and old EV's will be added to the stream of old cars. They will all be broken down to bits and what can be recycled will be recycled. No news here just FUD.

As for converting a gas car to an EV, well that's just not going to happen at any scale. Modern electronics just don't play nice when the engine is removed. It can be done, but even those that were doing it are getting out of the business. One article I saw the guy said by the time you buy a used Escalade or Audi, rip out the ICE parts and replace them with EV bits you could buy any number of new EV's and have a better, cheaper vehicle.

Converting older car that don't have all the electronics make no sense either. My wife's 25 year old X90 screams for a EV upgrade. Paying someone to do it is going to cost new Tesla Model 3 money. DIY is going to be $20 - $25K and every one of my weekends for months. And, at the end of the day it will still be a rattly 25 year old car that had $20K+ sunk into it.

LOL, my brother in law called me last night about this. "DiD YoU heAr AoUT tHe tESla rEcAll? iS YoUR CaR saFE?" I find it to be pretty funny actually. Full self driving and its smaller sibling Autopilot require the driver to be engaged in the driving of the vehicle. I only have autopilot and if I stop paying attention the car will let me know. On long road trips I keep my hands on the wheel and "drive" while autopilot does the actual steering. It's wonderful, and I arrive with a clearer head because the endless minor corrections of keeping the car on the road are handled by the car. The first world problem with that is most of the time the car does EXACTLY what I would do, because I'm not putting counter pressure on the wheel the car will warn me in unmistakeable terms to pay attention. I'm not sure about all the issues, but the stop sign problem is old. Basically they programmed it do do 4 way stops the same way most drivers do them. Slow down to almost a stop and if there isn't any cross traffic go though, sort of a rolling stop. To get to my house requires going through several 4 way stops. There are only 2 times I'll come to a complete, hard stop at those intersections, First when there is cross traffic, second when some jerk is tailgating me in some big ol hurry. In that case what the NTSB wants Tesla to do is be a passive aggressive jerk, just like me to the tailgaters.

I would take my classic in to get a HYBRID swapped in if it came with a warranty.

No, you saw a headline and then STATED peer review was where group think comes in. You literally said so. You used it, without even reading it, to support some conclusion about what peer review was.

"Ask some questions". No, you make statements, sometimes in the form of a question.

Don't try and gaslight this crap

Lighten up Francis. I was in a hurry literally running out the door. Forgive me if I hit “Post Reply” without reading the link. For fuuuuuuck, might wanna cut back on your sugar intake. :)

I do! Sure do love stirring the pot, especially against popular thought. It is entertaining hearing the bullshit responses of people trying justify more bullshit. EVs are nothing more than continuing march of insatiable consumerism. Has nothing to with stopping man made climate change or protecting the environment.

Not an excuse. Saw the peer review headline in my Google News feed, been meaning to read it. My bad if I prematurely posted it to the discussion. You can believe that or not.

Generally just skim this crap anyways…and kinda half ass argue with people for entertainment.

    LOL!

Have been working with the public for I dunno, 25+ years now. The number one thing people bitch about is other people. Came to the conclusion that everyone hates everybody else…

…and with the pandemic, political elections, what not and so forth, even more so now. :D

But how much would you pay?

Now that's funny. The brother in law that called all worried about my Tesla drives a truck that looks just like this -
    [IMG]
It doesn't have the rack and the utility sides are lower, but that's his truck. I'd forward this to him, but . . . (fill in your own blanks here) I think I won't just to keep the family drama down.

I’m late to this EV phobic shitshow, but as the owner of an EV, in CA no less, for the last 6 years I couldn’t let this quote slide. I see nobody addressed it so here I am a week later. I know reading is hard, but you’re grossly misunderstanding what the recommendation was. Just like it’s been for the last 20+ years they recommend that you not use unnecessary electronics during peak hours. A recommendation is not the same as a mandate. Those are sort of big words so I understand if you got confused. If you want to use your washing machine during peak hours, go on ahead but it’ll cost you more per KWh than it would off-peak. Wanna blast your AC while doing laundry on peak hours? Go ahead, but it’ll cost ya. See where I’m going here? If you took the time to read more than just the headlines maybe, just maybe, you’d save face.

As 90% or more of EV owners would tell you, they don’t charge during peak hours regardless of rates or recommendations. The car is set to charge overnight and be ready to go at a set time in the morning. My car is set to be done charging by 6:30am M-F which usually means it starts around 3-5am. I can count on 1 hand how many times I’ve needed to charge during the 4-9pm window in the last year.
