What have you done to your Tacoma today? 1st Gen Edition

I believe you, and I originally planned to. Only thing is I’m honestly wore out from my project and am in a rush to do this last thing. Figure I’d pay some one else to finagle with it cuz I just don’t have enough room to work under there fiddling with it trial and error like without a lift. Need it done.

 

Drove the Taco for the first time in 3 or 4 months. Put 500 miles on her with roughly 4500lbs in tow. Made the same drive with the same trailer in the GX and the GX barely noticed it. The Taco on the other hand noticed every fuggin' pound. Had to drop into 2nd or 3rd going 20-30mph on a few grades. Once the trailer was unloaded and gone, it felt like a speed racer. Definitely missed how much fun this truck is...

 

Same, but with my 4banger. 4th gear 3k rpm 60mph average most all of the way. Grades were about the same experience as you. 8-9 mpg average. Trailer weight around 2500 lbs.
Needed about a 10in drop hitch as well...

 

Neither of these posts are getting me stoked for an upcoming 1800 mile tow.

 

most annoying part was how often I had to fillup. about 135 miles per tank

 

i do not miss having to tow with the taco.. it would do it.. but man the tundra is effortless. 550 miles of driving today with my mr2 in tow. horrible mpgs. but it handled it lol

 

I was worried about that as well. I averaged 10ish mpg for the first 100 miles (minor grades, stoplights, defrost in) and used that as a baseline. The following stretch was 170 miles with more grade and zero service. I was nervous so I topped the tank off. Ended up rolling into the station with just over 1/4 tank. Not sure how that worked, but must've been the stoplights in the first stretch that really killed me. Just did the math and pulled anywhere from 10mpg to 18mpg depending on the stretch, with an overall average of 15mpg over the 500 mile trip.

 

I’ll be sizing down to 31” tires prior to the trip so hoping that I end up in a similar mpg range as you did. I can keep a pretty light foot so I have that on my side. Also will be towing a single axle rather than tandem, fingers crossed it wont be over #3500.

I hauled a 6x10 enclosed for a neighbor last summer but it was an 8’ tall box at #2500. Hoping this next trip goes noticeably better with a v nose and reduced frontal area, even though I’ll be heavier.

 

Don't forget to get an alignment after downsizing also, that'll help some more.

Is your CO bottoming out before the air bump?

 

No, the bottom of the body of the shock passes through the coil seat. The shocks never bottomed out. They can't the bump stop will stop it.

The bottom of the body of the shock (blue line) would have to get down to about the green line for the shock to bottom out.

 

Replaced battery after frying it by tack welding a front hitch I built into place... Lucky I didn't do more damage.

Remember to disconnect your battery before welding!

 

You are totally right... I must have been lucky though... cause I can't tell you how many times I have forgotten to disconnect my batteries and never had a problem.

 

Finally drove it after all the new work. It's crazy how much better it feels without a misfire. Runs and idles great, but I am trying to track down a clicking noise that exists after it's been running a while. I think I potentially found the culprit being the silicone hose that goes from the IAC to the motor (it splits in 2) was collapsing under vacuum. I kept the OEM hose and it looked like it was in good condition so I slapped it back on. I need to run it more to see if it comes back.

I don't remember hearing this before. I would assume if it was a vac leak it would be idling much higher. It's idling at if not lower than before. Only happens on quick blips of throttle. Only changes at the throttle body was taking slack out of the cable, and adjusting the "soft close" mechanism to use more of its travel.

 

My 5VZ does the same thing; always just on quick blips like that too. It always sounds like a vacuum leak, but I believe it is normal.

 

That's how engines sound when you open the throttle fast, sounds good!

 

I was wondering how those would look on a lunar mist, I am into it.

Maybe my slack was so bad before I could never get that quick blip feel I took out a ton.

For anyone that’s interested. I spent way too much money and then waited a couple months, but here we are- Dana 44 hubs, manufactured spindles, lower ball joint uniball conversion, and RCV axles. Yes I know everyone is saying I’ll break my front diff before anything. But when that happens, I’ll upgrade that too. IFS for life. Also, time for ABS delete.
