neat splice

heat up the plastic on a crimp connector. push the metal part out of the middle; I use a nail to do this. slide a piece of shrink tube over the wire. using the removed metal sleeve, crimp the wires together. slide the shrink tube over the splice and heat. I've already put two pieces of shrink tube on for a double seal. the second piece should be longer and the next size larger. I've never had any problems with anything done this way, and it seems to work really well on exposed wires that need repair. also looks pretty decent.

 

I can't remember where I found them, but I found a box of the metal connectors you're talking about. No shielding, so you can crimp them on and heat shrink over them like you're talking about. Very nice, neat way to make connections, put a little solder in the connection, heat shrink it and you've got a splice that will never come updone and looks nice and neat.

 

I have some of the crimp-on butt connectors that have heat shrink tubing on them already. Just crimp then heat up the ends to shrink for a water tight connection.

I try to solder and heat shrink for most stuff though.

 

I need pics to make sense of this.

They rock. You can get the non-weatherproof ones at some walmarts where they sell crimps. They're more expensive but they're much better and you can reuse them.

never saw the double layer shrink tube you mentioned. I'll look for it. sounds like that would really work good on trailer wiring etc. like I mentioned earlier, I never had a problem with anything I needed to splice, but this sounds even better.

 

Ya where would I find the double layer heat shrink tube? I like using heat shrink tube for wiring, but never seen that double layer. Thats sounds like something I would like.

 

Nothing wrong with crimp on connectors if they are crimped properly. every issue I have ever seen with crimp on connectors is because they were crimped incorrectly. Needles nose or pliers are not the right way. I prefer the ones with the glue coated heat shrink already on them. They are a little pricey but work really well. You can find them at most auto parts stores. In the military.... yes military... think fighter jets, everything was crimped. we used similar splices to the ones i mentioned from the autoparts store except the metal piece and glue sleeve were separate... so you would crimp on the metal part then slide the sleeve over and heat shrink.

I cant think of any retail stores that would have it... I think Frys does... but not many people have access to a Frys.

 

Hmmm...I can see fry's from the parking lot at my work Maybe I will pick some up for future use.
