What about the hybrid version? I know some articles has mentioned that the same hybrid going into the 4th gen Taco is on some Lexus right now. How is the Lexus with that hybrid doing so far, anyone know (in terms of function, reliability, and mpg)?

They will probably switch over to Maverick, Frontier, or Colorado.

Interesting video, if you haven't already seen it. Andre from TFL Trucks speaks in depth with a Chevy engineer about Chevy's turbo 2.7L 4cyl. I know, I know, a lot of you don't like them but this was an interesting perspective behind the engineering that goes into the engine that hopes to compete with the 4th gen. Some good stuff in there. However I could not help cringe when they said that they will continue with AFM. It will be interesting to see how this all plays out with increasing competition in the mid size market. Also, Roman wasn't there to interrupt.

    Toyota's Competition.

The hybrid system in the tundra makes 104 more torque and 48 more hp compared to the non hybrid and has the same payload. That is a significant power output compared to the non hybrid. And it makes 583 torque at 2400 rpm. The T24A with a similar setup will give the tacoma a better toque curve than any previous tacoma model, considering the 2.4L turbo already creates better torque numbers at 3000 rpm than any previous taco. That sounds perfect for a midsize like the tacoma. Toyota is literally giving us an engine with the torque characteristics of a small diesel engine. The same thing so many taco owners on this site have had wet dreams about for years. And we get that without the added bullshit that goes into making an emissions compliant diesel in the U.S.

I just hope there's a bit more interior space.(lower seating position in the front and more legroom in the back seats) This is the main reason I swapped over to a 4runner, the interior space of the 4runner is just the right size for me.

Quite interesting, so newer Turbos or atleast that engine does not need idle cool down similar to 80s Turbos

I've driven both and agree it depends on lifestyle. The gladiator excels at technical rock crawling for sure and it is way easier to modify. That being said though the rubicon with 33's manages to have the same break-over angle as the pro at 26 degrees, thats pretty rough. The IFS in the taco is also superior on the road and at higher speed desert driving, It is also much more comfortable on moderate trails. Not to mention the build quality is pretty rough on jeeps the days.

If you're dessert driving you're buying a Mojave . No way the Taco is better , the the transfer case and gearing is far superior on the Mojave .

Gearing is and transfer case is superior for sure, and Jeep did go to greater lengths reinforcing the frame and other components for high speed driving. But it’s still a solid front axle. There’s a reason desert racers prefer IFS. The Tacoma has a very stout IFS that pairs well with a good 2.5 shock like on the pro. The 2.5 fox shocks on the Mojave help but it’s hard to mitigate the negative handling of a solid front axle with just shocks. I have spent yeas off-roading in the desserts of the southwest and I would take a taco with a mild lift and 2.5 shocks any day over a gladiator when it comes to dessert wheeling.

What’s worse extra diesel emissions equipment or extra turbo and hybrid equipment. Seems about the same to me.

The 2.4l turbo isn't very impressive. The torque increase is minimal. Infact it'll probably have the same towing capacity as the 3.5l as well as the same mpg.

One of the things I found most interesting is that the Colorado mid-output engine has the same internals as the high output variant and can be tuned up, and they all run on 87e10-15.

I imagine AFM can be tuned out, and there are disabling devices on the market iirc.

Same here, I've driven both and liked the Gladiator better in a lot of ways (Engine, transmission, 35s can fit stock, convertible, front locker, much easier to modify suspension etc) but at the end of the day, their $10k discounts disappeared with the shortages which is about the price difference between them roughly equipped the same where I am.

Turbos are proven, don’t want to go down that rabbit hole again. We’ll see about the new hybrid system but Toyota hybrids generally have few issues and are known to last a long time. Look at all the issues duramax Colorado’s have.

In the highlander it makes 17% more torque. That’s not a crazy increase but what matters is where in the power curve that torque is delivered. Making peak torque at 3000rpm vs 4600 rpm in the v6. That will be noticeable and deliver a better driving experience in normal driving and while hauling heavier payloads and towing.
