4hi questions

I read the card on the sun visor. I wasn’t quite sure what it means when it said “keep below 55mph..

Does that mean switching from 2wd to 4hi..keep it below 55mph?

Or

When driving in 4Hi, keep it below 55mph?

 

I'm pretty sure on the card it says to only switch to 4hi while not moving, or moving very slowly, anyway.

4hi is a very low gear ratio... I don't think you could hit 55 in 4hi if you wanted to... You'd be screaming along at 7000RPM or something insane...

 

It means you can not switch between them above that speed. Being in 4hi imposes no speed limitation beyond what you have in 2hi.

 

I think you're confusing 4hi with 4lo. I can shift my 2011 into 4hi from 2wd at up to 62mph. And have driven in 4hi at 70mph- about 3000 rpms...

 

I think you have 4H and 4L mixed up...

OP...I believe you have to make the switch at or below 55. You can drive in 4H faster than 55 but why would you ever need to? If the conditions are so bad that you need to engage 4WD hopefully you'd be driving a bit slower anyway...

 

Your sunvisor means....don't go faster than 55mph while driving in 4hi.

It means don't switch to 4 high above 55 mph... I go faster then 55 in 4 high every day.

 

I just checked my visor card. Mine says to keep vehical speed below 60 mph when shifting from H2 to H4. My owners manual says "to shift from H2 to H4 reduce the vehical speed to less than 62 mph. Also, it says shifting from H4 back to H2 can be done at any speed.

I haven't been OUT of 4-hi in three days. I DO drive over 55 quite regularly. Just stay off hard pavement with good traction.

I believe it means to go slower than 55 while you shift into 4-hi from 2-hi.

 

x2, but I'm 2007 4cyl/5spd/4x4. (rpms a little below that at 70...if memory serves)

 

On the newer ones: Change 4lo to h4hi 62mph or lower (I stop, press clutch, before going 4lo).

I can not imagine a situation where I would be going over 62 in 2hi and realize "oh crap, I should be in 4hi"

But, I might drive softer than others!

Sometimes 4hi on the snowy highways is added control. Around here it's a given. I would think you have snowy highways up Saratoga way. I would figure there is enough slippage even at speed. Then again, if you got slippage, you should probably slow down

 

exactly! 4hi doesnt really add much stability at higher speeds. It seems to give too much overconfidence. i only use 4wd to get going, 2wd will keep you moving as fast as you "should" go.

Basically what i mean is if you need 4hi to keep moving you shouldnt be going more than 55. 5-6" on the road and you can likely move with traffic in 2wd, 2' and even with 4hi you wont be able to go 55.
